Do tell? Which religions?

Well, for example, there is the Chidren Of God who, up until the 80s, preached the virtues of adult-child sex. They've had a bit of an internal Reformation since then, but I'm taken to understand that many of the people who were involved in that era are still around in leadership positions.

And I probably wouldn't want anyone who subscribes to Wahabbi Islam, even though that might not qualify as a religion per se. And certain factions of Catholicsm, the Pius X groupies and whatnot. And I wouldn't be too open-minded about anyone belonging to Freddie Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church.

Plus, you've got religions that might disqualify someone for a certain office, but not all. I wouldn't want a Christian Scientist as Minister Of Health, for example, but he'd probably be okay on education.

Oh, and people from groups that practice polygamy would probably get an automatic thumbs-down from me, even if the polician himself wasn't doing it. I know I know, call me a bigot...

I should say that I might entertain the possibility of voting for someone of these faiths if he made a clear and public declaration that the group's tenets would not influence his decisions in government. But even there, some groups would not be given the benefit of the doubt. The Westboro Baptists, for example, are such a small and tightly-knit clique that I can't imagine anyone renouncing the picketting of funerals without removing himself from the group.

As for regicide remarks, when has he ever NOT readily called into question survey results of this sort? Conspiracy nuts will never be convinced that hope is a genuine thing; they're already too jaded for that.

I believe in Obama's message of hope.

I hate how its simplified to 'ready for a black president' as if there is nothing else to the guy.

It isnt about America being ready for a black president, as much as that america (might be) ready for an articulate man who would like to bring a very divided country back together again, as well as one who is ready to address many of the U.S.'s most pressing issues.

Now, Regicide and Steve, you guys seriously need to knock it off in terms of calling each other names. It's getting very old. I thought you guys agreed to try to be more civil and walk the line. Stick to your words, fellows, and make a concerted effort..... Is that hard to walk the line?
You can only be told so many times about something very simple to follow, guys.

Thanks...

Little mixed girl,

I've always enjoyed and often learned something from your posts. This one puzzles me. On this forum, you have a unique insight that the rest of us don't. I am curious why some people don't think Obama is 'black enough'.

I know his dad was from Kenya and his mother is white. That means his father's family did not have the same experiences as American blacks. However, it seems to me that as Obama was growing up and living in America, he himself would have received the same treatment as other black Americans when he went into a 7-11 since the clerk would not have known his personal history.

I do not mean to challenge you. I am asking for your insights.

I think it was Penn Jillette who noticed movies set in the future always have a black president. "See, it's the distant future where everything is different. America even has a black president!"

Whoopie Goldberg said that when she (and I) were in high school, only Star Trek's Uhura indicated that black people had a future. I was always struck by that comment.

How many black Americans don't have white people in their ancestry, somewhere?

Considering that all homo sapiens sapiens came from Africa not all that long ago, isn't it a bit pointless to ask this kind of question?

What's sad is that in America today, 1/2 Black--or any amount of Black if its know publicly--still makes someone all Black as far as many Whites are concerned. By many, I mean very, very many.
