I'm looking forward to the next world cup finals. I hope I am still here to witness the drubbing that will be dished out to the Korean national team. |

That's assuming they'll even qualify!

Loads of countries do that. I remember when Argentina beat England a while back in 1988 world cup (I think) the British newspapers said in their headlines "ARGIES GET THEIR OWN BACK" It is really stupid, but everyone does it. |

Yes. I think they shouldn't have a problem though. The Asian qualification process ensures a certain number of teams qualify. Korea are one of the better teams on the continent so I would be suprised if they didn't make it. However, Korea have had some bad results lately. Noticably they lost to Vietnam. Some Koreans blame it on the fact that Hiddink has left. Maybe they should see how PSV are doing. They look likely to crash out of the Champions league at the first group stage, and trail Ajax in their domestic league. |

The British media were refering to the Falkland's war of 1982, not a previous football match. |

England were eliminated by Argentina in both 1986 and 1998, so take your pick which one Butterfly meant. BTW Gwangjuboy I thought you weren't anti-Korean just disappointed by the refereeing decisions in one particular game? (referring to last week's discussion of the Spain-Korea game). |

As there wasn't a world cup in 1988 I assume this poster meant the 1986 World Cup. We hadn't beaten the Argentinians in any recent major tournaments prior to the 1986, or 1998 World Cups. So what exactly did Butterfly mean? The British press could only have been referring to the Falkland's War.
In response to your other point. I am not anti-Korean. I would just like to see that team destroyed at the next world cup finals. I was (still am) very unhappy with the way Korea progressed through the last world cup. I would also like to see the smiles erased from my Korean friend's faces who claim that Korea will do the same next time. In the same way I like to see my English friend's teams slip up in the English leagues too.
Many people have made remarks to the effect that I am anti Korean. This couldn't be further from the truth. I have a fantastic relationship with my students, a wealth of Korean friends, and a great Korean girlfreind. I am also studying the language. What makes me laugh is that a lot of my posts are based on arguments I have had with my Korean friends, students etc. It's amazing how they don't react half as sensitively to my remarks as a lot Westerners do. The term I would use to describe many people on this site is "fence sitter." Bertrand Russell wrote a lot about "sheep." I suggest some people read his works. |

Yes, I suspect the journalist was refering to the Falklands. Yes? Point?
And Spain won. I wholeheartedly concur. |

Yeah 1986 'hand of god' incident, 'Argies get their own back' was of course a direct reference to the Falklands war, raising the point that Korea is not the only country to get all nationalistic, talking of 'revenge' when it comes to sport. The year in which it occured is hardly the point. Yes it is silly that Korean press talks about revenge re the Germany match, and constant silly references to the Ohno incident, but the UK does it too, as I'm sure does everyone else. Though I doubt any country has a press more jingoistic that that of Britain. |
