I"m actually going to start an export company. I'll be exporting cars to South Africa. I already have a shipping company (costs around 120k won to ship a car there in a container) and looking for a proper market to sell there.
One person I know is making a killing selling cars in Libya, Sudan and Lebanon. If you want to make real money, the auto industry and exports are where the real money is.
I have 5 cars already lined up for export! My first sales will be coming soon.

If I was offered less than 2.3 + housing + airfare + benefits and 6 weeks holidays I would be gone without thinking twice and I am not a short timer.
As a newbie I would not accept an offer of less than 2.1 + 2 weeks holidays +airfare and other benefits.
A newbie with classroom experience should get 2.2 + benefits + housing + 2-4 weeks holidays.
If they don't get that, they should shake their head before they sign the dotted line.

That's nice. Now answer the question.
As for me, no. I wouldn't be able to pay my rent as well as eat and afford my beer and cigarettes. I'd take my wife and get the hell out of Dodge.

You know, even if I made that amount of money here I'd still be saving. I only made a bit more than that in Canada ($800-900/mth) and I had rent/more expensive bills to pay back home that brought my "anything I want" salary down to $200-300mth.
But... I think I'd only stay a year. You can't really save much money to pay loans on that. I'd probably "get away" here for a year or so and then head to Alberta or something. |

I'm sorry the poll is flawed.
700,000 is not really a living wage in Korea. When threads come up, from time to time, asking about expenses/savings etc, the general consensus is that you will can get by on about 700-1000 a month with the rest as savings.
If your poll offered a figure closer to the region of 1.5mill I think you'd get better results.
Personally, I'd maybe work here for a year for the experience on 1.5mill but not for longer and wouldnt consider spending significant time here. On 700,000 I wouldnt be able to travel (abroad, and very limited locally), buy clothes, go out drinking, treat myself to decent meals, etc. I'd be eeking out a living and coming home without money or much of an experience. |

700,000 I make this is 3 days tops. I would have no idea how to live off that peasants wage. |

I wouldn't work anywhere for 700,000 won per month, or $700 per month. My time is more valuable than that. Considering that you would be working roughly a 35 hour week, that would be 5,000 won per hour. I highly doubt anyone would work for that money, unless it was in a country where the cost of living is dirt cheap |

Many people actually work for free, they're called volunteers. Quite a few part time workers also make that or less. I might consider working for that amount, depending on the hours etc., but my situation is a bit unusual for foreigners in Korea, in that I have been semi-retired for a few years. Obviously foreign English teachers in Korea who need to support themselves through their jobs wouldn't accept that amount. |
