Just got my new DX 10 card and going to play Crysis next week.

Thinking it is time to get Vista. My plan is to actually buy it at Yongsan.

Which Vista do I want? I want 64 bit. I tend to not do anything fancy with windows. I also don't want to blow 200 bucks + on an OS.

Advice?

Here is the newegg link:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000368&SrchInDesc=Vista&Tpk=vista

I don't understand the difference between 1-pack for system builders and ones that don't say that. Also, is Ultimate really TWICE the price of Home Premium?

I got Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 and it didn't cost a dime. Fully legal except I didn't have to shell out 200,000. And, given the choice, well....Very Happy

I thought someone came out with a work-around so the DX10 cards work with XP?

Check the net for that.

There is a hack for Crysis that lets you get the Dx10 quality with XP using Dx9 http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=538747

All Dx10 cards work with XP.

But not utilizing DX10. Unless you count this as DX10.

That link is interesting but I won't be trying that out....

Dx10 is taking a long time to show it's self as an impressive improvement over Dx9. There was so much hype before VISTA and Dx10 came out.

Go for the 64, otherwise it limits the amount of RAM your computer can read.

The benefits are clear, but there are few devs jumping on board, and what with the lukewarm reception that Vista has received, who can blame them? It was probably Crysis themselves that offered up the DX10 hack for XP...increased their sales dramatically.

It also needs to be said that the current incarnations of DX10 are overall not that impressive; there are many reasons for this, some compelling, some not so.

At the risk of being called pedantic for the 100th time, I wish you would have phrased this differently.

Go on, I'm interested now. What benefits and how clear are they? And why aren't the "devs" going for the Dx10 VISTA? Just down to profit? They must have learnt from mico$oft. Laughing

If VISTA was good enough they wouldn't still be sticking to XP and Dx9

Present day examples of Dx10 benefits over Dx9 please.

Thank you.

My friend suggests that I get Vista Home Premium - RETAIL as I may be changing mother boards soon.

He also says that I just suck it up and get a legit copy. Not because of any moral issues, but because I'm not an ace with software or my OS and he says that over time you will have to know what you are doing to preserve a hacked OS and get needed updates, fixes while not getting busted by Microsoft's various anti-piracy schemes. He swears that if I don't have a legit copy and am clueless with software that I will invalidate my Vista at least a few times by accident requiring full reinstalls at inconvenient moments.

OTOH he says that for people who know what they are doing and/or just want to TRY Vista then a torrent can work quite nicely.

$220 won't kill me. I DON'T want to do a lot of thinking and searching for various hacks, or for info. on how to get which updates when and when NOT to update to preserve my hacks etc... Do you think that in this case a legit copy makes sense? Is preserving your cracked copy at least a bit of work esp. for the computer noob?

Your friend seems to not have access to good versions of hacked Vista. Both versions of Vista that I have used passed validation, installed sweetly, no serial key needed, and have updated to SP1 no problem. I haven't had to hack anything. All I did was download, burn and insert disk.
