Where is the bit about the "Omani" woman?
I see people talk about it but not the article. |

That came from my post to Tiger Beer:

That's an interesting perspective Tiger Beer. I actually know a women from Oman who was quite shocked on reading the newspapers while she was studying in Australia. She couldn't understand the fuss about it.
From her expression, I thought she was going to deny it went on or something like that, but she said "I've had that done and it's good." I thought "Eeeek!" but smiled politely, and tried to think about blue skies and cherry blossoms! It had never occurred to her that it might be considered quite unpleasant. |
I was talking about my Omani friend. |

Genital mutilation is offensive in males as well as females.
I do see the irony of Westerners preaching against female circumcision in Africa while being silent on the issue of routine infant circumcision in America where, while the rate is declining, a majority of male newbors continue to be submitted to genital mutilation. In the vast majority of cases it is done with no medical indication, without anaesthesia, has unnecessary risks, violates the male's right to integrity of his body, and causes lifelong harm even when the procedure goes "well" by permanently decreasing the amount of sexual sensitivity. |
Decreasing? umm are you sure, I dunno what kind of sex you have been having but I assure yoiu it is enjoyable/ Also, there is a difference between cutting a girls clit off and circumcision. In the area of sexuality, the clit IS the female sexual pleasure center. I have met a frew girls who orgasm just through penetration alone, but this is not common. |

On the subject of male circumcision, Korea has a pretty weird recent tradition. In most countries, it is done when the child is an infant. This usually means that the process is less painful, heals quickly, and won't be remembered by th recipient.
In Korea, however, it is done from age 10 and up. I've had students who limped into my classroom and told me they just had an operation. This wouldn't be so bizarre if it were a big tradition dating back a couple hundred or thousand years. Apparently, they've been doing this since the end of the Korean War in an attempt to westernize themselves.

Some Turks, in the past, had their kids circumcized at say age 5. |

Newborn babies are having sex?
It's about personal choice. If you want to mutilate yourself it should be your choice. You can be circumcised at any age so why not wait until you are older and can make the decision for yourself. |

There is a market in baby foreskins:
Because of this, theyre not tossed out with the rest of the medical waste after a birth. Instead, hospitals sell them to companies and institutions for a wide variety of uses. Companies will pay thousands of dollars for a single foreskin.
Some of the strangest purposes theyre put to:
* Cosmetics: Foreskins are used to make high-end skin creams. The skin products contain fibroblasts grown on the foreskin and harvested from it. One foreskin can be used for decades to produce fancy face cream like the SkinMedica products hawked on Oprah.
* Skin grafts: In addition to making products for skin, a babys foreskin can be turned into a skin graft for a burn victim. Because the cells are extremely flexible, theyre less likely to be rejected. Currently, this technology can be lifesaving in providing a real skin band aid to cover an open wound while a burn victim heals. Researchers at Harvard and Tufts are working on advanced skin replacements that use human foreskins.
* Cosmetic testing: All those cruelty-free cosmetics you buy? Some of them are tested on foreskins. This yields better results, since theyre human skin. And it saves the lives of the rodents your shampoo would otherwise be tested on.
Does this make the hospital ever-so-slightly more interested in continuing the practice? |
What a weird world. |

The only STD for which that has been claimed is HIV, but that has been debunked. See The Truth about Circumcision and HIV.
Also, Medical article disses circumcision as HIV preventive

Swaziland circumcision program a failure

After years of circumcising young men, the HIV infection rate in Swaziland has gone up, not down as predicted. This data is from a 2007 Swaziland health department report, which the government has had for three years, but continues to circumcise men anyway. Government health officials are only now questioning using circumcision as an AIDS preventative. |

I'm sure. While it still may be enjoyable, circumcised sex may only be 25% as enjoyable as uncircumcised sex:

Circumcision Cuts Penile Sensitivity
Intact men enjoy four times more penile sensitivity than circumcised men, according to the "Fine-touch Pressure Thresholds in the Adult P-nis" article published today in the British Journal of Urology International. The study was conducted to map fine-touch pressure thresholds of the adult p-nis in circumcised and noncircumcised males to compare the two populations.
Researchers measured fine-touch sensitivity of the p-nis at 17 specific sites on the intact (non-circumcised) p-nis and the remaining 9 sites plus two scar sites on the circumcised p-nis. The results surprised the research team, according to Morris Sorrells, MD, lead researcher, who said, "The most sensitive part of the p-nis is the preputial opening. The results confirmed that the frenulum and ridged band of the inner foreskin are highly erogenous structures that are routinely removed by circumcision, leaving the p-nis with one-fourth the fine-touch sensitivity it originally possessed." Five sites on the p-nis - all regularly removed by circumcision - are more sensitive than the most sensitive site remaining on the circumcised p-nis. Researcher pediatrician and statistician Robert Van Howe said, "Oddly, the most sensitive site on the circumcised p-nis is the circumcision scar itself."
Previous studies documented that circumcised penises are shorter; now researchers have compared and found them lacking in sensitivity, too. From their findings, researchers of this study conclude that circumcision ablates the most sensitive parts of the p-nis. These findings come several decades after Masters & Johnson said there is no sensitivity difference in a circumcised and a non-circumcised p-nis. Now their questionable findings have been disproved and the results of this study provide additional evidence about the importance of preserving the protective, sensitive foreskin. |
And of course while I would never engage in such a practice , some circumcised male masturbators report that the thumb and forefinger of the self-abusing hand tend to want to go exactly where foreskin is missing. They still manage to get the task accomplished but with greater difficulty than would otherwise be the case.

While the extent of circumcision can vary widely, in many cases it does include clitoridectomy.
Anyway, here is what you need to know from the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers:
# No national or international medical association recommends routine circumcision.
# Only the USA circumcises the majority of newborn boys without medical or religious reason.
# Medicalized circumcision began during the 1800s to prevent masturbation, which was believed to cause disease.
# Today's parents are learning that the foreskin is a normal, protective, functioning organ.
# Today's parents realize circumcision harms and has unnecessary risks.
# Circumcision denies a male's right to genital integrity and choice for his own body. |

Not only do I think that genital mutilation should be stamped out, but I believe that it should be cut out as well. |

Infant male circumcision is genital mutilation
Quote: |
Men should have the right to choose circumcision, not have the choice forced upon them. Infant circumcision without consent or immediate medical justification is an unjustified violation of basic human rights, that shares more in common with ancient coming-of-age rituals than responsible medical practice...
Infant circumcision involves performing surgery without consent to permanently alter an individual's genitals. In many cases this is done without good medical justification, for example to force the infant to conform to the expectations of a particular religion. Just as we call sex without consent 'rape', circumcision without consent or reasonable justification should be called 'mutilation'.
The practice became popular in the United States as a 19th century tool to stop boys masturbating. Female circumcision is ultimately a brutal means of oppressing women's sexuality, and male circumcision was intended to achieve the same... |

Genital Mutilation is terrible. Even when it happens to women who are not white. In fact, it is just as terrible when it happens to women who are not white, as it is when it happens to women who are. I do not agree to white or brown people performing it on either white or brown women. I do not agree that it is a good thing, whether you are christian, muslim or animist.
It's really not on, in my opinion. I would like to see it stamped out forever.
How about you dear posters? |
I only know of it in Northern Africa and parts of the Middle East.
Which white women does it happen to that you are referring to? |
It happens to some Asian/Middle Eastern/African women in western countries but I don't see why white western people would be doing it. Its against the law in the UK but it seems that they are reasons of "cultural sensitivity" having trouble enforcing it.
Unfortunatly, we have to be sensitive even to those who flout the law of our country. I think all the UK based parents who do this should feel the full force of the law. |

I get the outrage over female mutilation. That's just wrong and barbaric.
But why are people so sensitive about male circumcision? I was snipped as a baby and I love it. Sure it's not as sensitive as males that still have the extra skin, but that can be a good thing. Mine looks cleaner, smells better, and is pretty dern awesome if I say so myself.
Every girl I've been with that has been with an uncut man says she prefers the clean look of a snipped tip.
Stop hatin fellas. |

If you want to consent to that as an adult, fine. But to violently assault the genitalia of a newborn with a knife without medical indication is nothing short of true sexual abuse and torture. Have you ever been present at a circumcision? I have. People are outraged at routine neonatal circumcision maybe because of this.

You are already admitting that you'd love it even more if you hadn't been mutilated.

Looks are a matter of opinion, but anyway, have you ever heard of soap and water? The foreskin is the only part of the body where anyone says chop it off so you don't have to wash it.

To borrow one from the feminists, whose body is it?

Start loving your kids. If you think your boy should be circumcised, let him wait until he is older to decide for himself. Leave the babies alone. |
