What?! He only bowled a 37?! That's it! He's lost my vote! I want a president who will answer the phone at 3am and bowl 10 strikes in a row! Anything less is a threat to National Security, God and Country, and a bunch of other patriotic phrases that elude me!

Here are the number of times, according to NEXIS, that various topics have been mentioned in the media over the past thirty days:
Yoo and torture - 102
Mukasey and 9/11″ 73
Yoo and Fourth Amendment 16
Obama and bowling 1,043
Obama and Wright More than 3,000 (too many to be counted)
Obama and patriotism - 1,607
Clinton and Lewinsky 1,079
And as Eric Boehlert documents, even Iraq that little five-year U.S. occupation with no end in sight has been virtually written out of the media narrative in favor of mindless, stupid, vapid chatter of the type referenced above. The Clintons are Rich!!!! will undoubtedly soon be at the top of this heap within a matter of a day or two. |
Yeah, this is a big problem with the MSM. Yoo's idiotic and possibly illegal torture memos, Mukasey's 9/11 gaff (or truthiness) are far more important issues that bowling.
Iraq damn near fell apart last week and Al-Sadr wound up in near complete control of Basra, with solidified positions, street cred, and tactical acumen. The Maliki government is a complete failure and our military is at the breaking point while theirs throw down its arms and joins Sadr's.
But no, thanks to the morons of the MSM, candidates have to worry about the "Paris Hilton effect"- the ability of a celebrity to distract the MSM and voters from an issue that affects a candidate. For example; if it's Hillary/Obama vs McCain/Lieberman in the general, and the Clinton camp release devastating info on McCain. It hits the press, but the next day Paris Hilton/any A-list celebrity does something outlandish. Let's say she she goes on a high speed chase and runs over a pregnant woman. The media's entire attention would be on her for probably a week or two, and the effect of the story on the polls would be less apparent or even negated.
And the MSM wonders why half of Americans don't trust the press.

RS,
Just a suggestion, if you could post briefly what the link is about that would help people know what they are looking at (yes, most people are lazy). Agent posted a nice summery of the numbers.
It definitely is difficult keeping the media honest.

This is good advice RS. Choose a couple of paragraphs (perhaps the first bit of the article, or a really juicy sexy part) to get the reader drawn in, and then they might click on the link and read the full article. Otherwise, many people will just click away again. |

Yes, well, with 2 people of such high caliber offering the same advice, it makes little sense of ignore it.
I'll keep this in mind for future posts. |

The problem isn't the media. Well, part of the problem is the media. They're like the corner store in the ghetto that sells Wild Irish Rose to homeless alcoholics. But they can legitimately argue that they are merely serving demand. |

Well said, and it would be hilarious if not so pathetic.
But I have to disagree on one point: I'll bet the Hollywood bimbos like Paris and Britney get even more hits, and not just from bongs.
I used to be an avid bowler from a family of bowlers (some with state championships and perfect games), but I could care less whether he can bowl or even find the head pin.
Human interest stories are all well and fine but they dwell on the same ones because they all pick them up from the same AP wire. |

I remain dubious about the mysterious power of journalists to cloud men's minds. The simplest explanation is that this kind of thing is what people really want to know. |
