I don't really believe in the Devil since I am an atheist and an anti-theist, but I use Mighty Lucifer as my metaphor for my personal ethics. Satan is the god of the ego, narcissism, hedonism, pleasures of the flesh, striving for constant bliss, perversions and material possessions in this, our only, life.

I gotta say, I've led rather a spoilt life, with pleasures of the flesh never few. It works. All these theists making sacrifices in the here and now for the sake of the afterlife are out of their minds. It doesn't matter in any case, since if all that rot is true, I can repent and Jesus will save my soul! Mr. Green

Neither option is appropriate for me. You only included two ends of the spectrum. What about us part-time hedonists?

You're a NO vote then. To serve Mighty Lucifer is to feast like a Sultan, to be in love with money and possessions, to strive for aethetical perfection and hedonism. As a guide, ask yourself these searching questions:

* Do you consider yourself superior?
* Do you lust privately to commit acts that are as utterly base as they are monstrously foul?
* Do you set limits on pleasures of the flesh? Is your life a search for the ultimate better-than-sex hit?

Really, you should convert, because girls and women love the Devil. Eve succumbed to temptation. Diamonds are a girl's best friend and all that?

I voted yes, only because by not serving a bronze age sun god (better known as the god of the bible) I am technically in the service of satan. And apparently you can serve the bronze age sun god (catholics, mormons) and STILL be serving mighty satan. You can make your Pascal's Wager and still mess up.

I'm a little confused by your second and third questions. Why the word, "privately?" It seems that keeping these lusts private is, in a way, setting limits.

Anyway, I answered, "no." But if I were not a Christian, I would take your route. I don't understand the people who believe "God is dead" but seem to follow moral codes based on theism.

Yes. It is clear your understanding is flawed. Moral codes are not necessarily based on an appeal to a god. Is "do not steal" wrong simply because god says it's so or because we'd have a hard time living as members of a tribe if people were taking things you actually need without your leaving?

Instead of attributing a strawman position to the moral attitudes of atheists, you should actually try to understand their position.

Hitchens totally destroyed Flakfizer's absurd and obscene conception of morality in God is Not Great: Why Religion Poisons Everything.

Huh? I never said all moral codes are based on theism.

Which moral codes based on theism do these people(atheists?) follow?

Let me first see if I correctly understand atheists. Mindmetoo said I should try to understand their position, so let's start there. Mindmetoo seems to be saying that we know what is right or wrong based on what would make tribal life more difficult. No one else has said much of anything about how to know what is right or wrong or what compels us to care about such things. This could be a tough task because I'm sure different atheists will have different answers, but I am curious about the matter.

Many would see these morals as forming in societies as part of their survival. That a society that cooperates and relies on trust will survive longer than a society that cheats itself. There is that golden rule often repeated by religious figures 'do unto others'. Here we have a social contract where we cause no harm so long as no harm is done to us. And if harm is done to us then we have the backing of others to bring the perpetrator to justice. Although there will always come along one person who tries to cheat the system to get ahead. Just look at your hagwon boss.

Most of what we call immoral behaviour threatens the terms of the contract. We protect our neighbours in the hope that they will do the same for us. You can link this to evolution or anthropology or whatever you like. But if you say religion, well what do you really believe came first religion or morality?
