I am trying to catalogue the first 3000 words in the Yonsei University word frequency chart. I'm stuck on number 349, which is 하 as a bound noun.
It's not listed in any Korean-English dictionary, so I have to look it up in the Korean-Korean dictionary.
Here's what it says:
중이 된 위조부터의 나이를 세는 말.
( word for counting age from 중이 된 위조)
It gives the example of: 법랍 20 하
법랍 isn't listed in the Korean-English dictionary either.
So here's what the Korean-Korean dictionary says about 법랍:
중이 된 뒤로부터 세는 나이.
중이 되어 여름 안거를 지내면 한 살로 친다.
(중이 된 counting an age backwards.
When it passes 중이 되어 summer 안거, it scores one year.)
안거 isn't listed in the Korean-English dictionary either,
but the dictionary listed 하안거 and 동안거 as relevant words.
So here's what the Korean-Korean dictionary says about 하안거:
1. 마음 편히 생활함.
2. 중들이 유력 4월 16일부터 석 달 동안.
그리고 음력 10월 16일부터 들어 앉아 수해하는 일.
(1. Life with a comfortable mind.
2. 중들이 유력 during three months beginning April 16.
And come in and sit down beginning October 16 in the Lunar Calendar 수해하는 일.)
See if you can make any more sense out of this than I can. |

After you become a monk (중), you start counting your age anew from zero. 하, therefore, is equivalent to 살 in secular age counting.
After each summer (하) 안거 (not sure about specifics - must be a period of less strenuous practice), a monk ages one year. So you enter the monkhood in January, you become one year (1 하) after the summer of the same year. If you enter after the summer, you must wait till the next summer to become 1 하.
The counting unit 하 is a direct transfer from the 하 of 하안거. So a monk's age is counted in summers:
"How old are you, monk?"
"I am 20 summers old."
That's what I gather from what you wrote. |
