By Kim Yon-se, Korea Times (April 6, 2008)

Quote:
A poll shows that 34 percent of first-year army cadets called the United States the main enemy of South Korea, a former superintendent of the Korea Military Academy (KMA) said....

... The KMA did not make the result public during the Roh Moo-hyun administration, which ended last February.

... the unfavorable attitude toward the U.S. was due to high and middle school textbooks....

In addition, according to a survey of a group of conscripted soldiers conducted by the Ministry of Defense, about 75 percent of them said they have anti-U.S. sentiment

These army cadets are also probably a little unhappy about being drafted and losing two years of their lives being abused.

They're not being drafted. They've volunteered for a commissioned officer program. Draftees enter the Korean military at the lowest Enlisted rank. The Military Academy cadets are considered part of the military already and upon graduation are commissioned Second Lieutenants.

Oh, I thought this was about the draftees. I don't know the difference. A lot of my friends have gone through two years of military service, but I guess none were cadets.

There are four general categories of rank in the South Korean military (from lowest to highest):
  • Private
  • Non-Commissioned Officer/Petty Officer
  • Warrant Officer
  • Commissioned Officer

A cadet at the Military Academy is considered to be higher than a Warrant Officer but lower than a Second Lieutenant or Ensign.

The Military Academy is similar to the Federal Service Academies in the United States. All students are receiving tuition-free education and are in trianing to be Commissioned Officers. They must accept a commission upon graduation. Their obligated service is ten years. I don't know the exact obligated service requirement for the ROTC cadets at other colleges in Korea but do know it's nowhere close to ten years.

Here is a page showing the Army ranks and insignia.

Here is a page showing the Korea Military Academy cadet ranks and insignias.

This page is for the Korean Naval Academy midshipman ranks and insignias.

I can't find anything for the Korean Air Force academy rank insignias.
