And Maine still has lobster, I think. And a lot more people than you would think. Betcha don't know the capital of Maine! |
Yup, we still have lobsters, lots of them.
We lost Stephen King though, he moved to Florida permanently. I was reading in Time all his books will now have a FLA setting. Like there aren't enough authors writing books about Florida already.
There really isn't that many people, I think the pop. is around 1 million, and most of that is concentrated in southern Maine.
I know the capital! |

The US does it's own PR. Unfortunately the PR that is done on telly portrays the US as a bunch of obese, McNation, who have nothing better to do than carry round guns and shoot each other. Your president really doesn't help with any positive image of you. That's how it is. If you're going to broadcast you crap all over the world about oversensationalising everything of course it's going to have a negative effect on your image.
I for one am fed up with programme after programme of tedious sameness and dullness. The OnStyle channel on TV here really paints a superficial, cosmetic nation who would shit on their own mother to chase the American Dream. (Is that culture?) You send this crap to other countries what are they supposed to think. These foreign people will probably never visit America, so let's take what we see on TV as a fair representation of you. In the same vain as Americans only having limited knowledge about the outside world because they see it and base their opinion on some TV program. A nation that prides itself on it's stupidity when it comes to any knowledge of anything outside it's shores. That's just dumb. But what are normal people supposed to think. A bombardment of crap results in negative PR for you. Why don't you try and change it? |

Well, I think first and foremost the US is a capitalist country, in both the best and the worst ways. Sex, violence, death, blood, gore, sluts, drugs, that's what sells. The media is a business and they put things on the TV that get them the best ratings. Nobody wants to hear about all the good aspects of the US, if there was a station like that there would probably be about ten global viewers, but the other stuff...well, that's what pays the bills I guess. |

That's the worst bit. They've created it. Unfortunately the American people have to bear the brunt of it. There's a good majority of people who didn't vote for GWB but he's the "president" and the whole shit pile that he created really hasn't done you any favours.
The problem with the TV issue is it's at saturation point. You either get sucked in or you stay well away. I remember reading that America spends more on porn than the total wealth of sub-saharan Africa. That's a lot of porn. But I suppose supply and demand.
Coming from a capitalist country, it is difficult to imagine life without it. BUt the a certain degree it stinks. Skrewing somebody over to make a buck, being top dog, dog eat dog etc. Personally I think America is going the same way as the USSR. It's slowly imploding, it's a seriously bankrupt country with it's fingers in all the wrong pies. It cannot maintain this, the thing is that Russia and China are just biding their time waiting for the inevitable, as other did with the USSR. |

I'm not even going to waste my time addressing the idiocy in this post. I, for one, couldn't care less what people from other nations think of me based upon some tv programs. Besides, what are people supposed to watch? UK, Canadian or Aussie tv? YAWN!!!
I honestly don't think its stupidity about the rest of the world. Apathy maybe. Most don't care what YOU think of OUR nation. If you don't like our tv, shut it off. Its easy. The only reason its out there is because there is a demand for it.
Most don't care what YOU think of OUR president. Truly. I don't care for him much either but I get a voice in who will be there next. What I love, more than anything, is when someone from another nation tries to tell me who to vote for. Its precious.

It's obviously just my own individual experiences. The only people I know who who died at roughly my age, all died while visiting the US. Anyway, I'm explaining rather than justifying. It does seem like a superstition, but it's one explanation for why some people would think that way.
By the way, I have tons of American friends in this country, way more than Canadian friends. |
Bad luck?
Contrary to what the media tells you, deaths of young adults are pretty rare..... I should know....being one.
Unless they all get hit by a car.....maybe your friends need to pick a safer career choice...besides drug trafficking or being professional wankers.

I'm not quite sure what american programs get shown in your country....but most hardly put us in a bad light....Unless they love running our comedies like Police Academy or showing Micheal Moore films.
As for Onstyle...do you know what the viewing market for that channel is? Well-off women in their early thirties and higher....Most Tv aimed at that demographic is pretty horrid(soaps).... |

In a thread about why the US is misunderstood not caring really sums it up.

Didn't OnStyle used to run "Third Rock from the Sun?"
That was a pretty cool choice to teach people about America. |

| I left my number. What do you want my address too? Just called one out to see. I saw. Move on. Some said leaving my number on the web was stupid. I consider it something somewhat different. I'm from MIssouri, the" Show me State" I was shown. But I knew. Tough on web-wimp in life, betcha he ain't got no wife.(sic) If you've got some nads, where day be? Oh please don't distance yourself from me. I would be so sad. Until the next gig, then it's party time and party big. Vocalists and musicians tend to have lots of fun. And I'm certainly in that group, for decades. Want proof? Put your money where your mouth is. Rock and Roll my brother from another mother. Seeth and hate. I feel great. YEEE HAAAA Boyeeeeee |

You're correct. Americans not caring about what other people think of them is why they're misunderstood. What would you have us do, elect our President based upon what some Europeans think? |
