Its not just your school. They are bad everywhere. Yes, your sweet little grade 5 angels you had before have turned into grade 6 monsters. here is why:
1. Last year's grade 6's gave your 5th graders hell. Now that they are grade 6, they feel its their turn to dish it out to everyone else in the school.
2. They are at the top of the food chain now. No one is gonna stop them.
3. Puberty. They are pumped full of hormones and they no one has taught them their body is changing.
4. Attitude of other teachers - Everyone knows once these kids hit middle school, their life is going to be a strict regiment of studying, cramming, and testing. No more playtime for them. Therefore, they get treated leniently because they are still in Elementary school.
5. They've figured out the system. No one has ever been held back or failed. No one has ever NOT graduated from Elementary school. Because of this, they know they can do anything they want and still walk out with a graduation certificate.
I'm a drill sergeant to my grade 6's. They get away with nothing. They may be king of the school ground outside, but inside my English classroom, I am the King, Emperor, and Czar. And yes, I am tyrannical and ruthless with no mercy.
In my opinion, grade 6 Elementary kids should be bumped up to Middle school. Middle School grade 3's should be bumped into High school. |

| Nah my grades 6 ( at both schools) are still angels. Sure, they are kings of the jungle now but I don't put up with that in my classroom either. I'm not a tyrant but they know certain behaviors will not be tolerated. 3 strikes and you're out. I'll kick a student out with no hesitation and embarrass the coteacher (when they decide to grace me with their presence). |

Last semester my grade six students were horrible monsters. I hated them. I almost quit because of the stress the grade six students caused me on a daily basis. Forty brats all in the 'defy the foreigner' mode. Forty brats talking loudly for the entire class. Forty brats ignoring every instruction I gave. If I ordered a particularly misbehaving student to go to the corner, or outside to the hallway, they often wouldn't budge. They would just say 'no.' I had to physical remove them and drag them to the corner or hallway. There was no way that I was being defied by racist little brats. My Korean (female) co-teacher was genuinely afraid of them. How wonderful, beautiful children can morph into such horrible creatures by second semester of grade six I will never know.
This semester is much better, but that's because it's the first semester of a new year. It's in second grade that they morph into monsters. Rude, boorish ajoshies in the making. |

It's an interesting proposal. Back when the Japanese first divided them into elementary, middle, and high kids were developing at a later age. |

That would be on par with the way the school system is setup in the US.
Also, I would also add that I would give grades to Elementary students. Their report card now is ridiculous:
Kim Ji Hyun's Report Card
Ji Hyun can do math up to division. She is also good at art. Her English skills are average but her science teacher says she has a lot of potential. She gets along very well with other students and is very polite.
Yes, that is your typical elementary school report card. I had to translate one. |

And that's all the more reason why Omah wants to send little Jihyun to a hagwon where she thinks she can get properly assessed.
On the other hand, I doubt that many NA elementary schools give students very accurate grades, either. |
