Nation's Quality of Life Below OECD Average
By Lee Hyo-sik, Korea Times (April 8, 2008)

Quote:
Overall, the country's economic and financial indicators were in good shape but the quality of life for its people remained below the OECD average.

"per capita gross domestic product (GDP) ranked 23rd with $23,038"
Ratio of teachers salaries to GDP 2.4 (see the table below)
If Korea's GDP is $23,038, then Korean teachers earn about $55,000 (or 55,000,000 won) per year.

Why would population growth and a higher birthrate be considered a good thing?

The thing I hate most about Korea is the crowds. Even on a mountain in the forest I bump into people: never a peaceful quiet moment. Just one moment of silence, please.

Population growth is necessary for economic growth.

My wife and I went to look at the Cherry Blossom trees last weekend, near KAIST. I was struck by how quiet it was, even though there were a few people there. It was just so strange for Koreans to be contented with a place without finding a need to make a bunch of racket. Of course, there were still a couple of jackpots who drove through like they couldn't get out of there soon enough, even though they were supposed to be looking at the view.

The birth rate is a serious issue here. This article is about Japan, but the same pretty well applies to Korea.
