Because most of them have higher base salaries than us and their parents pay for everything.

Yes, I don't think I've met a Korean yet whom is poorer than me. But I'm sure they exist, I see their houses everywhere.

I wonder how much of it ties into the fact that there is such little drug use here (crime is more for personal financial gain), alcohol is a part of work not a inhibitor of such, and it's so strained in the culture that one must always be productive that you find even the most impoverished people doing "something" (even if it means opening a little convenience store where your the cash register is where you sleep).

I'm always surprised how quickly I'm shot down when I say "Oh, this camera is expensive, 250,000 won..." "Wow it's THAT cheap??"

...Gee I'm a student. I always get that reaction to just about everything. Education costs, rent, gadgets, clothes.. you name it. It seems the Koreans I know spend a LOT on their stuff.

Roughly half the Korean adults I meet have a lower base salary than me (including most of my students' parents), and most of the unmarried Koreans I've met in my town live with roommates and pay rent. I don't remember it being that way when I still lived in Seoul. Is it a small town thing? Are the rest of you OPs from bigger cities?

...But it's like pulling teeth to get them to spend 10,000 won on a textbook.

My wife hangs out with a lot of the other 'older sisters' she met at the postnatal clinic. I make more money than almost all of the other fathers. The one or two who make more than me got to their position through family ties. Certainly not merit.

Nothing like working for Daddy's company and being promoted to manager.

Even though we are not even considered lower middle class in Korea, a base salary of $2,200 (an ESL base salary in Korea) in Canada is quite elusive. Very few people with BA's in Canada are making more than $12 dollars an hour. $15/h is considered a lot. $20/h is considered all elusive.
Which means that the majority of us don't stand a chance in hell of surviving the upcoming rich/poor divide.

Agreed. I already make more than my parents do now, even after their years of hard work and struggle.

WHat the hell are you guys smokin?

Koreans have a higher base pay than us? No. Isnt the average Korean income around 18k? (although, now i realize the stats I'm thinking of are 2 or 3 years old, so perhaps I'm wrong.)

Koreans are lucky?... Let's see.... highest suicide rate in the OECD, highest accidental death for children in the OECD, one of the lowest quality of life rankings in OECD, studying for 10-12 hours a day, institutionalized alocholism, dirty country... yep, really lucky.... Sure, compared to places like Somalia, Tibet, Cambodio, Hondouras, they're lucky, but compared to where we come from? Get your head out of your arse.

Just becuase you couldn't get a job in Canada, doesn't mean the whole country is suffering. Chances are you studied the wrong subject, you didn't go out for drinks with the right people and make the proper connection, or you're just another one of Dave's social fuktards who thinks this hole is better than Canada

I agree with the OP only to an extent. This is more of a family-based society here (despite what American politicians might attempt to claim). Most kids go to university on their parents' dime; back in Canada, I even remember some rich kids who had to work part-time to afford university tuition, because their parents refused to give them a free ride.

But living with your parents until you're 35 because you don't have 50 000 000 won for key money really does suck.

Cuz I'm a nice guy and I wanted to give the in laws some time with their granddaughter. Don't worry, in 6 months, the wife, my daughter, and I will be heading back to where things are better... we can only be selfless and kind to the in-laws for so long.

That sounds like a good enough reason... and the reasons above for not being "lucky" are pretty good too. I mean, they have some more money, they have to work like dogs (although many only put in the hours, not the work) study (at least be in school) at school or hagwons for hours and hours and aside from the immune building environment, they aren't that lucky.

*the last was just a jab
