I'm an American citizen who has been living in Canada for the past 3 years. I'm waiting on my Visa Issuance number number, and my wife and I will arrive in Korea on May 9th. It looks like all my documents are in order, but there are a couple of things that make me a bit nervous:
1) Will the Ministry of Justice ask for a criminal check from Canada? I've got my FBI check apostilled and notarized, but I never got a Canadian check. My wife is Gyopo, and she spoke to the office in Seoul, and they said only an American check is needed, but immigration people seem to make up rules depending on their mood.
2) I will be in Chicago and LA visiting friends/family before arriving in Seoul. I spoke with the Chicago embassy, and this wonderfully sweet and helpful (sarcasm) woman told me that I had to be a confirmed resident of Illinois to do my visa there. I was born and raised in Chicago, and spent 22 years of my life there, but she said since I've been living in Canada, I can't apply to the Chicago embassy. I asked here where I could apply since I haven't lived in the States for 3 years and she said she didn't know - its not her problem.
I was thinking of using the LA embassy and using my brother's address for my home address. Do they ask for proof of state residency when you apply? From what I read on this forum, the LA embassy sounds a bit friendlier and easier to work with.
If anyone has had some experience in these matters, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
