Hi, everyone.
I just had a general question about getting a job in Korea as an English teacher with my qualifications.
I've graduated from UCSB last December with a B.A. in Sociology,
and I've also completed TESOL certificate program offered through the UCSB Extension recently.
I'm also considering about taking TESOL specialization course on teaching Business English.
I'm definitely looking into starting out as an English teacher in Korea,
but I've noticed that a significant amount of job openings wanted a native English speaker as their teacher, which I'm not.
However, I've been in the States for a bit more than 7 1/2 years,
and I've finished high school and college in the States,
so I consider myself as a bilingual (Korean and English),or at least close to being a bilingual.

In this case, would I have a fairly good chance at securing a decent job as an English teacher in Korea?
I hope to teach to adults in Korea if possible, though I'm also interested in teaching small groups of high school or college students.

Please feel free to share any thoughts or suggestions about this.
Thanks for reading!

There are a handful (at least) of SMOE teachers that aren't native English speakers. One that I met moved to Canada when he was a teenager but spoke enough like a native speaker that SMOE hired him.

My cousin is studying abroad in High School in the US. When I applied to GEPIK last year, his mother asked them the requirements to be a native english teacher. They said as long as he graduates high school in the States, and gets a degree from a 4 year University there, he will be able to be a native English teacher for GEPIK.

Do you have a US passport? Either you can get any kind of job with a US passport and degree or you could land a number of private academy jobs with a Korean passport and US degree.

Depends entirely on which countries passport you hold. As a Korean passport-holder, the doors to corporate classes is wider for you (and legal). I imagine high school after-school programs would be just as open for you.
