I only have 18 regular classes per week and am scheduled to do some after school classes starting next week. Rather than study from a book, I asked my CT about starting a newspaper club where the students could report about the other clubs in school (about 30 of them), fieldtrips, sports day, and general school life. Has anyone ever done something like this before? If so, what has your experience been and how did you conduct the class/club?

I've done it. It's hard if the students can't yet write correct sentences and you want the newspaper to be error-free. I've done it on a short-term basis and at the last minute I had to take what they had so far and edit (rewrite) everything.

If you have a long time or the final product doesn't matter, then go for it.

You may just want to start a "writing class" and see if you can get them from articles to nouns to verbs to adjectives, etc., then piece it all together and have them write a paper once they can do all of that.

Thanks for contributing such valuable information to this thread. Rolling Eyes

About 30 students have signed up to be writers, photographers and artists, so the turnout is pretty good so far. Starting next week I'm going to assign students as editors and then work on getting my school to buy QuarkXpress so I can run a workshop and teach the students how to layout pages.

Cool idea.

Install uTorrent or Bitcomet clients and then download the software for free. Mininova or BTJunkie have software, video and mp3 galore. UseNet is popular for torrents but I've never used it.

I'm not sure about product registration codes however.

You've got to be a real sociopath to steal it when the school will pay for it anyway.

My students actually started their own club to put out a news paper once a month. I only supervise and give help when they need it. Also, when I was in my university I worked on the school news paper and we used Adobe Page Maker. I found it to be pretty simple and strait forward to use and the kids seem to get the basic principles of the program. The group probably needs to decide how many papers to put out per semester and how big each paper will be. I found you can usually fit 2 stories with pictures on one page, three if you knock off a picture. Also need to think on target audience and how youre going to print off the papers.

I think a school newspaper is a great idea! I might try this with my afterschool classes, as a long-term project.

If you are looking for software, there is some open source layout software available. Take a look at Scribus (http://www.scribus.net/). Comparable to Indesign and QuarkXpress, though not quite as powerful. But it is free!

You might also try Gimp or Gimpshop for free photo editing software.

Thanks for the software links. I just started my after school classes this week, but my goal is to get rid of those in the second semester and spend more time on the newspaper club after school.

The goal will be to make one paper every two months, and then hopefully once a month after they get more experience. Most of the students who signed up are first grade middle school students, so their writing skills will probably need a lot of work. I'm going to have them write articles about school field trips, sports day, hagwon life, school clubs, music, game, and restaurant reviews, editorials, student interviews, technology review, vacation destinations, and a lot more. I'm giving the students control of content, so I can hopefully step back and act more as a superviser.

Most of my afterschool kids are also first grade middle school, and I've been having a hard time motivating them in class. I'm going to see if my school will go for this newspaper idea as well. It would definitely be a lot more productive than the nonsense they currently want me to do in the after school classes! I'm meant to do "conversation" classes with kids who struggle with am/is/are.

When exactly do your kids have time to do this?

Mine are either in class, eating or on their way to hagwons.

They'll have to make time I suppose. This may be more work than expected, but it should be a lot more fun than teaching after school classes

I would happily run a couple of extra classes at school but I just don't see how it can be done.

Are your kids MS or HS?
