Oprah Winfrey's Negative Remarks about Korean Women Spark Storm

World famous talk show host Oprah Winfrey has sparked a storm by making comments that seemed contemptuous of Korean women.
During a recent episode of her talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show," Winfrey was discussing women's image and fashion culture around the world when she disparaged Korean women, saying they have "an obsession with plastic surgery."

The program dealt with content that suggested Korean women have a unique preference from plastic surgery and an inferiority complex in which they would like to have Western features. It also described Korea as a plastic surgery superpower.

Because of this, the Korean-American community is harshly criticizing the program, and fallout is spreading as some Korean expatriate groups demand a public apology.

Well let's face it; these comments aren't exactly off the mark are they? The percentage of Korean women who get some form of plastic is very high. I don't think Oprah should worry about some over sensitive Korean Americans throwing their toys out of the pram either.

One Korean student studying in the U.S. said, "The Oprah Winfrey Show is a program with a lot of viewers worldwide, and for it to deal with Korea negatively like this is a big problem. Because of this, I worry if the nation's image won't take a big hit."

Of Jesus cry me a bloody river. Korean women en masse undergo plastic surgery; it's a fact. Why don't they just shoot Oprah for pointing out this fact? Of course, it's always different when the shoe is on the other foot with Koreans.

It is not like what Oprah said is false. Koreans are very focused on the outside, materialism, plastic surgery, being very pale etc.... I, frankly, think it doesn't do much for women's liberation in Korea for all these women to do plastic surgery...

Oops! No, I didn't. Ha! I was just looking at the Korean paper, and I saw in the left margin this story. Anyway, Oprah's words were right on the mark.... This obsession with plastic surgery and big eyes is ridiculous.

What Korean womens liberation movement?

It is my understanding that Korean women get paid between 20-40% less than Korean male counterparts for the EXACT same position. Often companies cite that Korean men need more compensation because of "lost time" due to military service.

I have been currently investigating the salary range of various Korean women in different occupations (e.g. sales position to Director of Korean and American companies). So far, I am appauled on some of the findings (anecdotal evidence I may add).

This was bumped to the top of the Chosun Ilbo site because our racist friends at the AsiaFinest forum dug it up in order to deflect criticism away from the Nazi ads. A few days ago there was a thread on "Oprah Chimp-frey" in which this article was linked, and I assume that's why it became most-viewed. Doesn't help that now tons of websites are running with the story, and that people are posting it all over the place without checking it. This was just a case of whiny, hypersensitive Asian-Americans getting flustered when an outsider dared to say something negative---negative but true---about Korea. Same thing happened with Jay Leno. I suppose the irony is lost on the posters who are writing about a "racist" black woman and calling her "Chimp-frey."

Please, put this to bed and stop feeding the millions of gyo-trolls.

Becasue while mommy and daddy are willing to pay for a new nose and eyes for their precious Su-jin's high school graduation present, they won't pay for new melons. Why would they when they know their precious is a virgin. You don't need big bazoms when you're a virgin until you're married.

Americans are shocked by Korean plastic surgery because Asian people are trying to fix things that are already perfect- in the eyes of a lot of Americans.

They take a perfect pair of eyelids and stitch creases into it, or try to take a cute nose and make it narrow and high bridged. That's why so many shows do specials on the "Asian-eyelid" surgery, even though it's old news to everyone else.

I understand that a lot of places prefer to hire people that look a certain way, so I would never put an Asian person down for getting plastic surgery, but I think most of it is unnecessary.
