I'm in the process of renewing my contract and wondering if anybody can document their experience on getting a criminal background check from New York.

Hi, Steve,

I got my background check through the NYPD, which was a huge mistake -- I had to go down to One Police Plaza in person, wait in a long line to get through security, then come back three weeks later to get it in person. (Because I guess my $25 certified check didn't cover an envelope and stamp?).

Then it turned out that was the wrong kind of background check, and I had to get a second check. I happened to be in Rhode Island, and went to the Lt. Gov.'s office there. I gave them $5, they printed out my records check; it took about 30 seconds.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I believe what you want is a criminal history record search, available through the New York State Unified Court System.

Although, man alive, $52? Do you have family in some other state where you can do it there?

Thanks aalais Ill bear this in mind, I've read about the NYPD search and had my doubts whether or not this would be the correct route to go. Thanks You've saved me a lot of time. I'm trying to avoid as much govt bureaucracy as possible.

hey, just wondering if this is completely different from the FBI criminal background check? the JET program (japan) requires a FBI record. is it different for GEPIK/EPIK? would any criminal background check do?
thanks!

I was curious if you are referring to what the NYPD calls the "good conduct certificate" I just received it and I got it apostilled, is this no good?

aalais,

you got the "Certificate of Good Standing" which is pretty much for if you are an immigrant living in NYC and you need to prove that you have not gotten into any trouble. The cert. is only good for the NYC area and US Immigration purposes.

What you needed to do was follow the directions on the back of the sheet they gave you. (I too went to 1 Police Plaza...etc etc.). All you had to do was send the fingerprints that the NYPD took to Albany with a money order ($50 I think) and you would have gotten your NY State criminal background check. Mine took 1 week to get to me.

The easiest way is to go down to 1 Police Plaza. The good Conduct Certificate is fine....that's what I did and here I am.

It's $30...they ONLY take money orders...so get one at Duane Reade or something so you won't have to go back. It takes about a week and you go back to 1 Police Plaza to pick it up.

Thanks, I didn't want to send it to Korea and then find out I would need a different one. I did stop by the Korean Consulate to make sure it would suffice (from the NYPD), they concurred.

Did anyone use this method to get their check in NYS? Did it work okay?
