My gf got a new laptop a few weeks ago and has a soft-sided carrying case for it. I noticed today that one of the outer flaps has a magnetic clasp on it, like you'd find on a lady's purse / handbag. It struck me as being very odd, that maybe someone wasn't thinking right when they designed the bag. However, she hasn't had any problems so far.

It's likely that the magnet just isn't strong enough to cause any interference / damage to her machine, but I'm still kind of shaking my head at the thought process that went into that bag!

mac laps have magnetic plugs for power and for running a second screen (not sure about the usb plugs tho).

I really don't the little magnet on a bag is going to effect the data in a laptop.

Mythbusters did a thing on this with credit cards. After all the effort they went through to actually ruin a card-giant electromagnets-I'm not all that concerned anymore.

I was in someone's car the other day and they had a magnetic cell phone holder stuck to their dashboard. I did an internet search for the things and apparently they are not that rare. I thought a magnet strong enough to hold the phone would trash it but I guess not.

A very, very strong magnet can erase magnetic tape or maybe corrupt data on a hard drive. A small magnet would do nothing.
