the apgujung gym closed its doors last week and the myung-dong location didn't have any staff today. there are rumours that the whole place has gone bankrupt. does anyone have any info?

i'm going tomorrow to th gangnam gym find out what i can. i'm a little pissed as i just renewed for the year (it was a big chunk of change).

gyms often suddenly close down here.
its the usual creative world classe korean biz model :

some lovely korean males take the membership fees for the year,5 yrs whatever,etc IN ADVANCE....reach critical membership mass,then do a runner with the all dough.
all the money in ,no momey out

gym turns into run down ghost gym, the korean women dont get their criminally low won in the hand wages,then dont turn up to operate reception,clean the place,do the work,etc..then it closes,usually on the quiet(face/shame)

.. happened here in anyang to a gym recently.
i go in there n work out in the ghost gym now for free as all the barriers are down and unstaffed.pool has been emptied.
it is getting a bit dirty tho now,worried about the filth so will prob stop.


..... happens quite a bit in the land of the morning integrity.. all is well, till we got ya money.

glad i didnt renew last spring, best facilities in korea but likely some of the worst management.

think things started going downhill when they changed ownership about 18 months ago

Hope some people FINALLY learn:
Never ever put down big key money,
Never ever pay for anything in advance
The bigger the discount for advance payment, the more you should be wary.
If you have to make an advance payment, make it a deposit, and as small as possible.
Trust No one!
It's amazing how in a country with a crapolla legal system, crapolla police, heaps of corruption, many people are MORE trusting than they would be at home.

I would also agree not to pay a lot upfront here. At my last gym, I bought a year membership. Within three months they went from being spread out over 2 floors to crammed into one small floor. I guess I was lucky they didn't just close though. I think they are out of business now however. Just joined a new gym and paid 6 months upfront figuring since they just opened they will make it at least four months if business is bad. Yeh, so far business is bad. If I make it to the 6 month point without them closing up, I will probably look for another gym that won't be going under in the immediate future.

Yup, both Apgu and Kangnam have closed down and I just returned from the Myungdong branch where crowds of Koreans were shouting and demanding answers. The pissed ajummas were walking out with the yoga mats (very enjoyable), and it was generally a huge fiasco. I'm kinda pissed too cos I had a lifetime membership. But I'm sure the people who joined just last week (instead of two years ago) will be somewhat more pissed than I am!

Korea has a crapolla legal system, unless a debt is secured by property, chances of recovering any debt are close to zero.

Major Western companies have been scammed, and could'nt recover debts, what makes you think you can?

That's why Koreans strongly prefer to do business with people they know.

Why do you think there are some many illegal Koreans in the US and The Phillipines. They've gone bust, or defrauded a lot of people and then done a runner.
