What are you kidding me? Who sings that song "Play that funky music?"
I used to be a very major fan of KISS and Ozzy Osborne. Deep Purple belted out a few good tunes. I guess you could differentiate between hard rock and regular rock.

I don't think you could distinguishe Granite from sandstone let alone hard rock from real rock. Most of the bands you mention are rubbish. I mean Kiss what gimmicky garbage. They might have seemed cool when you were 16. Try listening to some real music.

By the way Bono is a wanker and his music is crap

What kind of fishheads do you use for your soup?! I want to try some of that fish! It seems like a big hit!

What music do you listen to while you eat your fishead soup?

I listen to late seventies punk. I also love I put a spell on you by Screaming Jay Hawkins.

Saying that REM or U2 were the greatest bands of the 80's is painting with a wide brush. I am not trying to detract from the success of either in their own right but if you look at the music scene from 1980 to 1990, there were so many different genres that it would not be valid to point to any particular one. For example in the early 80's Rick James was considered to be one of the highest grossing musicians later replaced by Prince and I believe that both were behind Michael Jackson. Guns and Roses were probably the best heavy metal act but then near the end of the 80's Heavy Metal was redefined to mean bands like Magadeath and Testement. And what about Madonna? The 80's were a little more diverse than the 90's when alternative music became mainstream and you had Pearl Jam, Gansta Rap, and a whole swath of Lynard Skynardish country acts that would eventually fade into the obscurity of Branson Missouri.
Honestly I never really liked Rem or U2 as I listened to harder stuff but I would have to pick U2 over Rem anyday. Rem's sound was a presursor to all the Green Dayish alternative stuff that flooded the 90's switching from celebrating music and having a good time to hating yourself and everything else in the world amidst the biggest guilt trip a society had ever known.

I listen to some pretty obscure stuff from the 80s like the Cocteau Twins, Cabaret Voltaire, Talk Talk, etc. and I see no connection between 80s R.E.M and Green Dayish alternative rock. The best R.E.M. stuff wasn't their hits.

Well, what can I say about that except "Even old New York was once New Amsterdam, why did they change it, maybe people liked it better that way, so take me back to Constantinople, no, you can't go back to Constantinople. Why did Constanipole get the works? That's no one's business but the Turks". I think that must be the goofiest rock song I ever heard. Or what about that bird song? You know "Now everyone knows a bird is a word.. bird bird....".

Lately I 've been listening to the pre/punk stuff. The basic New York scene from CBGB's.Like Richard Hell and Voidiods or Johny Thunders and the Heatbreakers. Its amazing how Johny Thunders sounds so much like the Sex Pistols particularly how Steve Jones copied his guitar playing.

U-2 in one of the most disgustingly boring bands on the planet. Bono makes feel like throwing up. The way he just preaches politics just to make up for his complete lack of talent.

Since this thread has moved away from US vs R.E.M. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Prince or Weird Al - both of whom should be on the list for sheer talent regardless of whether you like their music or not.

REM?
Shiny Happy People?
Are you out of your tiny minds?

While we're discussing music from the 80s, here's a couple of my favs:

Jools Holland in full effect (at the end)

Bit of Blancmange

More U2ubed and perfect for teaching the Present Perfect Continuous

Apparently, millions of people disagree, my man. Frankly, I can't understand what's wrong with "Where the streets have no name?"
I also really loved that song "With or without you.....". I like more of their older stuff from "The Joshua Tree". I think it's too bad that Stevie Ray Vaughn died. He was great. By the way, no one mentioned Eric Clapton.
He was pretty good as well......

Skid Row "We are the youth gone wild...", "18 and life".

Guns 'n Rose "Take me down to paradise city...."

Weird Al was a great rock comedian.. He was his own genre...

"Pink Floyd" was still a force in the 80s (though Roger Waters declared the band "spent" in 1985 ...)

"Supertramp" also was a progressive band that produced some good stuff in the first half of that decade.

I don't think anyone's mentioned "Def Leopard" who sold a lot of albums (though I wasn't particularly a fan.)

Of course, the "Grateful Dead" were very much alive ...

And "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" probably deserve honorable mention (and they were still rockin' pretty well at this year's Super Bowl)

Actually, the most talented band that appeared near the end of the 80s, i.m.o. was the "Travelling Willburys" -

Way too much hippie stuff. Johny Rotten wore a Pink Floyd t-shirt with the words I hate written on it.

I wonder if Tom Petty and the Heatbreakers. Got their idea for their name from Johny Thunders and the Hearbreakers. The latter were played the anarchy festival in the UK.IN 1977.

In defense of Shiny Happy People: it happened in the early nineties, not the eighties.

I don't care what the masses think. A lot of mullets love U-2. Does that make them cool. Does that make that idiotic looking hairstyle any less repulsive. Bono sported a mullet for most of the eighties too.

Alot of rednecks got into U-2 in the eighties. I mean by renecks these guys use to pick fights with anyone who looked different. Once it was no longer cool to listen to old school metal these guys got into U-2
