Can anyone tell me who offers the largest amount of free online data storage space as I've put together a 'Week in the Life of an FT in Korea' video for friends back home and have tried to upload it onto my Hotmail Skydrive, but as the file is about 3.8GB, it's proving to be to difficult to upload it.
Can anyone suggest any other 'free' storage providers? Preferably ones that will let you upload large files such as this.
Thanks in advance. |

You could split it up in rar files or just segments to splice together if it's a video.
It's hard to find a place without small limits on file size. Largest I know of offhand is rapidshare which I think is 100 MB. |

3.8gigs...Can i suggest you encode it as a divx. 3.8gigs in divx format is probably 3-6 hours of footage depending on the quality of the encode.
Surely you can show a video of life in Korea in less than 2hrs? A good 2hr divx encode can go for as small as 700-800MB.
If you segment it into smaller parts, rapidshare is a good place to start. |

^Actually, it's only 37 minutes long funnily enough. I've probably saved it in a really high format or something.
So much so for Internet 2.0. I'll probably have to resort to doing things the old fashioned way; rip, burn, post office. |

Solution
If it's only 37 minutes this should be easy.
1. Get divx and encode it as a smaller file size. You should be able to drop that down to a 300MB file at very high quality, 100MB at decent quality. If you're too lazy you can probably save it from whatever program you're using as an .mpg under 500MB.
2. http://www.host-n-share.com/ - max file size is 500MB
3. Upload
4. ????
5. Profit! |

There is a wiki file sharing thing as well.
Other option is to make a private torrent on your PC and share it from there.
Read utorrent instructions on how to do this. It's not difficult. |

A torrent would definitely be another feasible way to do it, but access to the file would be limited by your internet connection. Whoever wants the file can only get it while you are online and is limited by your upload speed.
And he's going to want to make that a smaller file regardless. There's no way it should be over a GB, or even a few hundred megs really. |

Sorry to be a pain, but any chance you could give me some lucid instructions on how to do that as I've just downloaded DivX but I'm unsure what to do.
Also, I opened the DivX converter program and tried to drop the file into the little window thing and a message came up saying DivX doesn't support this type of file (I made the movie using Windows Movie Maker, which has been saved as a IrfanView AVI file, which may or may not mean anything to you. |

I'm on school computers right now, and as such can't look through menus or anything. (Meaning I can't give detailed instructions)
However, something doesn't seem right. From your description it sounds like that should work fine. There is no way divx should be complaining about supporting an avi file. Suggestions:
1. Check your file type and make doubly sure you didn't save it as a project or something.
2. Make sure you didn't opt out of installing codecs when you installed divx. If you did, go back and get them.
3. If that fails go back and save your file as something different. I haven't heard of infranview so perhaps it uses some weird codec. Save it as a "normal" avi or whatever else you like and try again.
If none of that solves your problem you've got something weird going on. |

^Appreciate that JJ.
I'll play around with it this evening and give it another go. I suspect your assessment is probably correct re: I've probably saved it incorrectly.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Cheers. |

open the file in windows movie maker and export it as a wmv file size will be shorter, then file transfer to your friends/family via your favorite IM program, use a torrent, or burn it to disc and post it. |
