Hi, forgive me, if this has been posted before. I did a search, but did not come up with much.
Has anyone heard of some new changes to the F-2 visa holders? Yesterday, the Principal tells me, "I'm going to have to take a look at the taxes being taken from your pay, there have been some changes for the F-2 visa holders. Then he turns around and says, and from now on F-2 visa holders can not open their own 'gong bu bang, study room" What that had to do with a tax change, was beyond me?
Does anybody know if there have been any changes? I know there were some recent changes to E-2 holders. Thank you |

| I had asked him about a pay raise that was discussed in the begining. Then he shoots from the hip, and blurts out something to do with F-2 changes? Where he came up with tax and study rooms, I have no idea. Maybe, he was trying to make these issues up to blow off the pay raise? I was just curious to know if there were/are some changes to F-2 visa holders? cheers! |

thanks for the tips. after reminding him of the "raise" that was "promised" he shoots off with, what kind of visa are you on? oh yeah, well, there are lot's of changes that have been in place F-2 visa holders, and there will be more to "come" I followed with an excuse me, that's when he shoots off and mentions something about the tax system changing for F-2 visa holders working for schools and no longer will the F-2's be able to have study rooms and or do private lessons. He ends his message as they all do, let me check on it and I will let you know, I do not want to make any problems for you.  |

He is full of crap. I guess I have been in Korea too long, if anyone said that to me, I'd have said something like...let me check into that clause that lets an F2 quit whenever the hell they feel like it. |

Your boss is full of crap. Your taxes (f-2 visa) won't be any different from an E-2 visa holder's taxes, unless you are getting some kind of tax refund. Boss is sidestepping the main issue of a raise, using your visa status as a reason not to increase pay.
Here's what you do: when the boss comes back with that 'new' information, tell him to be on the safe side you have to confirm with the tax office directly, and that you need to go there anyways because the tax office in your home country wants documents from the Korean tax office. That's just the way things work in your home country... |

He may want to pay you less so he doesn't have to pay more in tax. The reality is that as an F2 visa holder you belong to your spouse and not to your boss. The visa allows you to give notice and walk and get another job just as a Korean could. As for private teaching rooms they have always been a bit of a grey area.
It sounds to me that your boss is trying to exercise some control over you via threatening to expose alleged illegal activities whilst avoiding the whole pay raise thing.
Just state your case and if your boss says no then walk, there are more than enough decent jobs out there, and given the current job climate an F2 visa is very desireable, as there are not so many hoops to jump through. |

OP, an F-2 entitles you the same rights to employment as Koreans. You also have the right to open a business. You can do any job as long as you are qualified to do it...which means that you can open a 'kongbubang' if you've finished high school.

He's practically insulting your intelligence. 35k per hour if you work at a hagwon is pretty good, though. |
