It seems crazy as I should base my decisions for graduate studies soley on academic criteria but I called to ask about the socalled sports centre and I asked if there was a squat rack, to which the man replied no. Am I crazy or should I just eliminate said university from my list because I won't be able to do squats (they don't even have a smith machine); gym seems sparse in general from the sounds of it....freaking out...is it legimitate?

What would you do?

I feel your pain.

There's no gym with a squat rack within walking distance of my place, except for california fitness, and there's no way I'm signing up there.

It sounds devastatingly bad..... Confused Shocked

Quote:
We have a mix of items. On the resistance machines we have:

Leg press
Hamstring curl - seated & prone
Leg Press - seated
Leg extension - seated
Abductor / Adductor
Overhead press
Chest Press
Pectoral Fly
Back Extension
Lat Pull Down
Seated Row
Torso Twist

All Cybex machines

On the free weights, we are not a specialist weights facility as we
cater
for a broad cross section of fitness requirements however our free
weights
range consists of....

Olympic Bench Press - Up to 100 kg (Plates 10, 15, 25 kgs)
Dumbells in various combinations from 2 kg through to 37 kg
Fixed barbells from 10 - 55 kg
Mixed fitballs and a few light medicine balls. Shocked

There are specific areas for use of free weights. We do not have smiths

machine, squat rack
, Shocked but do have a pull-up / dips machine and a single
cable machine.

An additional double cable machine is due to arrive in early May.

Obviously we have a mix of CV machines as well.

Maybe he doesn't know what it is? Sounds unlikely....

Of the two colleges I've attended(one very small, one huge), both Gyms sucked....the best part is they were free and in walking distance.

Just join a gym ya cheap bastard....also they may have a separate gym owned by the school that charges monthly fees.....mine does....it's called the campus fitness center and separate from the on campus gyms in each dorm.

So many gyms say that you can squat with the smith machine. Oh yes, but you can only do so much. If you're a heavy lifter(that is squat more than 225 pounds), no that machine won't be of much help. Oh yeah, did I mention that most gyms don't allow you to do the power clean??? The trainers here in Korea have absolutely ZERO idea of the term weight training. It's all about bodybuilding over here so it's really difficult to find a decent gym with a decent trainer who can actually answer your questions.

I have occasionally done cleans but I am a (hobby) bodybuilder first and foremost. Exercises like squats and deadlifts are simply essential and then I look at the gym sites in the town of York and all they talk about is squash, beauty salons and other bullshit; I need a dungeon. That's why I like my current gym (only 1 of 2 things I like in Korea). The owner used to amateur bodybuild so he doesn't mind all the thudding, grunting and screaming. All the gyms in the city of York proper have the name 'fitness' attached to them, which is always suspicious. We all know what 'fitness' means.... Confused

I prefer to call them gravity x mass intensifier machines that give me bulgey tennis ball things on my vertical bending and lifting forks

I think that you could find out where they are by checking out the Korean bodybuilding sites and mag's. Get a Korean speaking friend to help you. You're right. If a health club offers squash, it's not hardcore enough for you. Also, you can check your local mountain trails for a weight area, too. A lot of times there are fitness areas which have weights but I doubt they would have a squat rack. Good luck.

Almost exactly the same thing happened with me, although luckily not as bad a situation as my school.

There are three decent gyms in my neighborhood within spitting distance, and would be completely fine except this lack of a squat rack. I discovered that about 8 months ago when I moved here. The trainer guys all just pointed me to the smith machine- jesus.

I ended up joining a gym that I had to take a subway to, but it's worth it. I finally got myself a bike the other week, so now I just cycle there. Good stuff. I still REALLY miss my old gym from when I lived in Incheon, though. It's as close to a "dungeon"-type that I'd imagine here. It's run by an ex-bodybuilder with a bunch of wins (nothing amazing, but some national), and inhabited by a bunch of good-natured roid mutants. I still go and visit those guys, actually.
