I got vaccinated for it in Canada when I was a kid. All kids have to or we aren't allowed in the public school system.

Do they do the proper skin test here? I am considering to go get checked if I have the dormant kind. I just had chest x-rays done last month and nothing showed on them. I just had a lot of flem cause of the yellow dust and dirty air here.

You can get the skin test, sputum test, blood test and X-rays here. Just ask. The costs are NOT that high.

Again, just to reiterate (shouting intended)

"THERE IS NO EFFECTIVE VACCINE FOR ADULTS AGAINST T.B."

It is endemic here. You CAN catch it (even if you were vaccinated as a kid or even if you had a booster before you came here).

Knowledge is your best defense. Beware and Be Aware.

Vaccine no, but treatment is possible for adults who have it. I am just paranoid of being a carrier but not having it active.

I'll prolly wait till i head to Canada in July and get one done there.

And some numbers for that

The protective efficacy of BCG for preventing serious forms of TB (e.g. meningitis) in children is greater than 80%; its protective efficacy for preventing pulmonary TB in adolescents and adults is variable, ranging from 0 to 80%.[41]

And a little more from what I think is a peer review paper from the Centre for Disease Control

CDC paper wrote:

The largest community-based controlled trial of BCG vaccination was conducted from 1968 to 1971 in southern India. Although two different vaccine strains that were considered the most potent available were used in this study, no protective efficacy in either adults or children was demonstrated 5 years after vaccination. These vaccine recipients were re-evaluated 15 years after BCG vaccination, at which time the protective efficacy in persons who had been vaccinated as children was 17%; no protective effect was demonstrated in persons who had been vaccinated as adolescents or adults (39).

Many years ago (1994), I came down with, of all things, measles (My then-elementary school age son had friends over when there was, unknown to me, an outbreak of the disease at his school); I was in the niche of kids in the States who were unvaccinated for it. Measles shuts down your immune system and I caught pneumonia as a secondary disease. I then had a case of pleurisy as a tertiary ailment (You DO NOT want that ailment). I ended up in a Korean hospital for a week.

When I had a lung tap for the pleurisy, it came out pink, and the young doc decided I had TB. He loaded me up with TB meds (along with the caution that they will probably give me drug-induced hepatitis). I did not start the course, but took the meds with me to the States when I went back. I saw my doctor there and he advised me to not take the meds; he was sure I did not have TB.

I tested positive for TB, but that was to be expected as I had a BCG vaccination for it and tests would show positive. However, according to the US docs, my x-rays and such showed no sign of TB. I have not had any further problems to this day. I'm sure I've been exposed to it, as I've lived here for so many years, but I am also equally sure I never had it as an active disease. If your doc says you have TB, get a second and even third opinion (and possibly one from outside Korea).

strange. very recently I was told I have scars in my lungs and needed further testing for TB. I did more x-rays, blood tests and a sputum tests. I should get the results on Thursday. Anyway, today a colleague who went to the same hospital and was checked with the same x-ray machine was told the same exact thing and has the scar in the same area of her lungs. Sounds real fishy. We need this check-up for our employment.

This morning my office told me to bring in a the copy of my contract because we have a new university President. They told me nothing would be changed on the contract except the new Presidents signature.

I had TB when I was a child. I can remember somewhere reading that if you had it once, you can not get it again?

ok,my wife is a a medical professional here..and this is her subject area.
APPX 30 PERCENT of korean population carry some form of TB..maybe no symtoms,maybe full blown,maybe new strain resistant to antibiotics.
it spreads because of the shared food dishes utensils,poor hygene in food prep and bathrooms,spitting...the guy is talking "crap about the one singular gob thing"..there is an invisble arosole spray in your breath,sneezing,gobbing n spitting.

proximity,cramped living conditions are important factors for spreading TB.
the massive overcrowding in korea,esp.seoul/subway allows a rapid spread between people

her best friend had TB..took a year to get clear,no symptoms,but showed up on a TB test to get into australia.she never knew she had it till the test!

TB is out of control in asia,esp korea(because of its overcrowding,food culture) and china(same reasons)
new strains are increasingly drug resistn here because asians (china and korea,india)lack the understanding to complete their long expensive course of drugs..the disease mutates etc..
they take a few pills ,feel a bit better,then stop.

just pray you are not jammed in a overcrowded subway carraige next to a sufferer with a cough.

http://www.cdc.gov/tb/faqs/

Symptoms of TB depend on where in the body the TB bacteria are growing. TB bacteria usually grow in the lungs. TB in the lungs may cause symptoms such as

* a bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer
* pain in the chest
* coughing up blood or sputum (phlegm from deep inside the lungs)

Other symptoms of active TB disease are

* weakness or fatigue
* weight loss
* no appetite
* chills
* fever
* sweating at night

often no symptoms...the korean girl i knew had tb residing in her bone marrow.
it was found when she wanted to move to australia( TB testing is mandatory)

took a year to remove,and a v painful process.
first treatment did not work.
made her very ill and screwed up her imune system
i try to keep very clear of koreans ..dont use public transport,esp during busy times,if possible.
as i said 30percent of koreans carry it in some form,often asymptomatic.
