Is it legal for my hagwon boss to force me to work on national holidays?

My contract mentions 15 days of vacation time, but these don't take place on national holidays, and the contract is completely silent on the issue of holidays in general. My bosses (both at the hagwon and at CDI HQ) expect me to work on holidays, even chuseok and lunar new year. I already worked on election day, even though everyone I know from other schools got the day off.

What should I do? Should I just flat out tell my boss I'm not coming to work on those days, or what? Thank you for any advice you can give.

You work for CDI from what you said. CDI is very well-known for people making a lot of coin and not getting much in holiday time. Didn't you know that? That's the norm over there. Some who are okay with that sign up for CDI. I heard people at CDI can make 3.5 million won or so.

Yeah, I know CDI's reputation. But what I was wondering about is the law. They moved me from one program to another at the last minute (a new program called April English), and they warned us that we wouldn't be getting one single day off all year, except the 15 days chosen by the company (Achtung! Fun time ist now! Raus!). But legally, if I tell my boss "I'm not working on Buddha's birthday, and I'm not working an extra day the following week to compensate" can I get away with it (remember my contract says absolutely nothing on this topic)? Surely many of you Davites have experience with this sort of situation. What does the law say about working on national holidays?

Well, technically you are supposed to get your national holidays as far as I know, but some hagwons do make you work on days like Election Day and Buddha's Birthday. However, usually, you don't work on days like Children's Day. They may be able to get away with choosing what days to give you. It is common practice.

I think CDI workers are subcontractors. I am not sure how things would apply to you. PM Ttompaz. Perhaps, he knows. He has the most experience. I've been here for about 2 years or so, and what is the law and what is not is unclear. I do know the Labour Standards Act says you must get 15 days off a year. It doesn't say it has to be given at a certain time or when exactly. As far as the national ones check the Labour Standards Act. I believe you are supposed to get that, but CDI doesn't care about that, and they expect you to go along with that. Many people don't sign up with CDI for that reason - the lack of a life or holidays.
