|

Hi, Ive gone through the whole process and have my visa, ive asked for ten days until i come to tie things up and see people etc. especially since i doubt ill be returning for a few years. they want me NOW. ive done a bit of emotional blackmailing to boot on this one and pointed out that if i pull out of my contract, then it will take them 3 times as long to get a new teacher. am i being out of line, will i give a bad impression to my new boss? all opinions welcome cheers. |

I can understand how you feel ... But I also don't know what you have said to them about when you were available to come as you have worked through the process. It is not uncommon for them to expect people to come as soon as the visas have all come through. I'm not saying that is right but it is true that it can easily be the expectation.
What I did in my current process was to give them a timeframe that I was available from ... which was far enough out that I could be at least reasonably comfortable in getting through the visa process in time and having the time to do the other things I wanted to do before I left ... and for myself working in the mindset especially once the job was confirmed and the actual visa process began... So even though I still don't have an actual departure date (still in the visa number phase) I am expecting that my actual departure date is going to be soon after I get the actual E2 visa in my passport.
At this stage they just want you as soon as they can get you. It is likely that the new procedures in Korea have delayed them being able to get a teacher in the first place.
In your situation I would give them the date that you are able to leave from - so the date that will give you time to do what is important to you -
and stick to it - Just say (which is true) that now you have the visa there are come things that you need to do now before you leave - and that you need X amount of time to do it - and will be available any time after X date (And probably make the time not too long) - They may not really be happy about it (they want you as soon as they can get you) - But they are unlikely to stop the process at this late stage.

thank you for your advice, i have given them a date about 10 days away. i could not possibly come before a weeks time anyhow. i have been messes around royally through this whole process through a bad recruiter though i should not reflect this onto the school. |

Wait until you have been here 6 months before you make that statement. Unless you mean that you will move onto other countries as soon as your year is up. |
