|

I recently (one week ago) quit my job at a hagwon at the seven-month mark, though my contract was for a year. My E-2 Visa and ARC don't expire until September. I booked a flight home to Canada for May 5, three weeks from now. Do I need to do anything to ensure that I won't get hit with a fine/be held up at the airport? I know that you can apply for an extension if you want to stay in the country for a bit after your visa/ARC expires, but do I still have to do this, since these documents haven't expired yet? My head teacher has told me that we need to go to the immigration office tomorrow before the school can give me my last paycheck - when we do this, what should I do there to ensure that I follow the proper guidelines to be able to stay in the country for another three weeks? |

they will cancel your visa there at Immi and issue an Exit Order giving you 30 days to leave - if you tell them you plan to leave May 5 they may very well issue it effective then - personally, I'd go for the 30 days in case you change your mind about something and want the time -
you might have pension coming if your school took it out - it takes a little time to process - check that out
good luck! |

Yeah I'm a bit worried about this as well. I recently handed in notice and was told I could leave as early as this weekend by my school but they are letting me stay for another week at the school without working, and I plan to maybe stay a week somewhere else after that..how long am I legally allowed to stay after they cancel the visa?
I've heard some people say 10 days, others 2...also my ARC and Visa are valid until the end of June, does that make a difference? |

It is NOT 30 days, it's 14.
If your school doesn't cancle your visa, you can stay until september for all immigration cares. You just need to make sure it doesn't get cancled. Chances are good that the school probably won't jump on canceling it right away. |

Take your plane ticket to immigration. They'll give the extension once your visa is cancelled. It should be around 30days. You can check the website. But I'd ask any questions you have in person and insure that person's answers are certain.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I just got back from the immigration office - it is indeed 30 days that you're allowed to stay. I must leave the country as per my exit order by May 16, exactly one month from today. |
