What would you like to know? I live near there.

Gireum is also notoriously home of one of the largest prostitution areas in all of Korea. It's sort of hidden, but it's there.

The area between Sungshin and Gireum is on a hill. You can shimmy a few stops north to find a Shinsegae in that area near Nowon, I think. There are also two Lotte Department stores around that area, and one in Nowon.

There are lots of little unis in that area. Lots of single ladies around Sungshin.

Hyewha station (Daehangno) is south of there a few stops on the light blue line.

The actual living area around Gireum is kind of patchy and city-like. Parts under the overpasses are similar to blade runner.

I guess I am wondering about how clean the area is and the type of apartments around.

Is it close to things or far away?

Aot of expats?

How are you treated by the Locals?
lived in four cities and found each has its own character some great and some not so.

Are the people rich, middle or poor?

What is the reputation of the PS and Haggys there?

Is it a busy or a quiet area?

Whats a taxi cost from say ....Hongdae or Yongsan?
Are there a lot of Taxis?

What about bike shops?

Single ladies are nice!! Very Happy my girl might kill me Shocked

I know certian area can be little cities in themselves.

I guess just want to get a feel for the area. I haven't been to Seoul for ages.

Thanks

Kewl thx guys!!

one more question.

trying to figure out whats next.

ok my options:

I am at a decent school get everything Iwant. It's a rich school so kids are brats.... BUT! i do have them under control for the most part. it's a middle school. I get DECENT vacation 2mths a year.

I am in Busan but the area I am in is way family lol
a lot of expats but very far .....hour taxi or subway from anything decent. The locals just avoid us for the most part. Nothing goes on here so gotta always leave and takes forever to get anywhere. I am not that big of a busan fan anyway. It not bad I just like Seoul MUCH better.
My contract is up next month and they are offering good stuff to stay but I am SO bored in this area.

My other option is work for Smoe but this is new area so I will be the first teacher in the shcool so no clue about how it will run and no clue about the apartment or vacation etc.
But, by what I have read now Very Happy the area would be great for me!! I could even talk my G/F into coming back to korea lol but as pointed out might not need too Cool

Totally don't know what to do.....

I've never heard such an acurate description as this one! Kudos!

My wife and I live in the area and it's not the greatest hood, but our villa is quite nice. There are many buses, subways and taxis so it's easy to get around.

Keep in mind that many Internationals tend to enjoy living in Haebangcheon. Best of luck to you.

SMOE gives teachers a base of 21 business days of vacation, plus national holidays and each school has another couple holidays they use at will throughout the year.

You can post a topic about your SMOE questions here, plenty of people will respond.

You are right, you don't know how a new school will be, but SMOE does have guidelines and training for foreign and Korean English teachers. What is hard to tell is whether the school will follow those guidelines and support you or not.

About the apartment, being in Korea will be a huge advantage to you. Request specific housing conditions. Do NOT accept a room in an officetel unless it's a big one. Specifically state you will NOT live in the Co-op Residence at Dongdaemun Stadium, or any other Co-op, especially if you are not a newbie to Korea. Or better yet, find your own housing and make sure to request the housing allowance.

And make sure you stop by HUGE, just outside of Exit 10 at Gireum.

That's H.U.G.E. : Hookers and Used Guitar Extravaganza!

(Just kidding)

Yeap, Harpeau has a HUGE guitar store in the Gireum area, too!

Check it out! (I don't think it's outside of exit 10, though).
