(CAUTION: IRONY WARNING - If you suffer from irony-deficiency anemia, leave this thread at once. The OP takes no responsibility for any untoward reactions suffered by anyone so affected should he insist on reading this thread.)

Every day, I make elaborate plans on just what I need to accomplish. I am very busy at my public high school and often engage in activities requiring concentration and extended periods of time.

The problem occurs when I am in the middle of something, the class bell rings and I have received no word that the class is actually going to be given. I have come in punctually to accomplish all I need. I mean, due to the time difference mornings are times for calling friends and family and some stateside businesses. Then, I have several email accounts to check which can take some time. Of course, I must check every post on Dave's, and we all know how time-consuming that can be. Besides that, I am on a number of other message boards. I must check my investments, dollar vs. won rate, etc. So you see, there is a lot to do.

Coffee is also an important part of a morning routine, as well as taking care of other daily necessities. And there are always photocopies I must make for future uncancelled classes.

These activities are made difficult by actually having to teach a class. Surely there must be another test they have to take, or the co-teacher needs the time to prepare a special project, or the principal needs to address the whole school. Can't they advise me in advance if the class will not be cancelled? Why do they always wait until the last minute? How do others deal with this?

You get used to it after a while.

It's another one you can chalk up to "Korean culture". In other words, it's not going to change, and there's nothing you can do about it, because you'll never be able to understand it due to your genetic makeup.

I personally find it a very valuable "excuse" for not having completed certain duties. If they expect me to change what I do, based on what they do, they need to do something different, and it just ain't gonna happen.

Besides, we foreigners get so few legitimate excuses, compared to the majority of Koreans seemingly abundant supply in this area, I hope they never get their *$&% together on this one.

I especially love the look on their faces, when you effectively dump the responsibility for things gone wrong, right back in their lap where it belongs.

I might be going out on a limb here...but I think it's called a sense of humor.

I guess I must be the only english teacher that gets as excited as the students when classes are canceled. I'm usually the first one to bolt out of there Very Happy

You can use the lesson for next time & you don't have to plan a next lesson for a week. What's to be unhappy about??

Isn't it incredible how clueless some people can be? There are a serious number of irony-challenged people on this board. I'll go put a warning in the OP.

Thanks for the laugh bacasper! The nerve of them--not telling us when we're going to have class! I too am thrown for a loop when I have to go through with what I'd planned to teach. Maybe today they won't uncancel the classes that aren't supposed to be canceled in the first place...then again, they might not uncancel classes that wouldn't have been canceled in the first place if there wasn't something going on during the class that isn't deemed as important as their other classes. One can only hope!

Last week one of my coteachers forgot I was supposed to go to class with her. I wasn't thinking, so I reminded her. Dumb! So dumb!

You gotta love it.
Walking to my 11 class, my a co-teacher called to me saying that the class was cancelled because they were doing a listening test.

Yippee, no class till 1:50.

Note to self. Don't post anything stupid or below character on Daves.
Expecting many cancelled for mid-terms, and shall go to play billiards with teachers. It shall be a mighty bummer if they're not all cancelled.
Maybe, after school class could possibly still happen, but I just don't know.

I am hoping for some cancelations for last minute cramming to meet the page quota before midterms. That would be rad.

Wow, today they were actually good! They told me with almost 24 hours notice that there are no classes tomorrow because of a field trip.

Should I go on the trip or sit at my desk for 8 hours? While I like Everland, the school's not covering admission or lunch except for a 20,000 won reimbursement. What to do?
