Anyone any idea what the chances of getting your end of contract airfare paid to you in cash as opposed to having an airline ticket purchased for you?
I'm referring specifically to anyone that's managed it through EPIK. Someone told me a while ago that it'll be near on impossible to wangle this, but I'm asking as I was hoping to go home in 2009 via the Trans Siberian Railway.

call a travel agent. kangsan travel . com for example.
tell them you need a flight home. get a flight reservation, print out the itinerary, give to your school. have your school reimburse you, cancel the reservation, and book your train ticket.
my coteacher actually told me to do this... you may or may not want to mention it. you may or may not have to mention it to the travel agent... most don't require you to pay right away to reserve a ticket, so you could get away without telling them. |

| If you do this, make sure you tell the travel agent to book a REFUNDABLE ticket. The school will prbbably want a confirmed (i.e., paid) itinerary, so if you can't get your money back after the booking has served its purpose you'll be out a big chunk of change. |

| Thought of that one a while back... turns out you need to show them boarding passes for the flights if you are re-signing. On the other hand, with EPIK in Daegu, they will give you the cash (one million) in lieu of the ticket home |

I think it's going to come down to trying to negotiate with them at the end of the day. I've about 16-months to figure out the best plan of attack. |

| seriously guys, i JUST did this a couple weeks ago. all my school wanted to see was printed off itinerary of my flight. my travel agent never makes me pay for the ticket before making a reservation. all i'm saying is it can be done. and quite easily too. |

| You need to check what your contract says, too. Some contracts specify that you only get the funds if you actually make the travel within a certain time frame. |

All airlines offer refundable fares. But yes, a refundable fare costs more. They don't, however, keep anything if you cancel. That's why the fare is called... wait for it...

China Eastern offers dirt cheap flights and they aren't refundable. |

Most airlines that I have dealt with charge a nominal fee for changes or cancellations on a refundable ticket. Korean air for example charges a 30k won service fee if you refund a ticket or change your itinerary AFTER the ticket has been purchased.
You have to make sure that your ticket is refundable BEFORE you lay the cash down AND check what the service fees may be for the cancellation.

Sorry, but just because you did it doesn't mean every local board of education is going to fall for the same trick. My city checks boarding passes. |

So they send somebody to the airport with you? Because, you know, it's pretty rare to be issued a boarding pass prior to check-in these days. If you'd said they check your ticket receipt, that I could buy. But boarding passes? |
