East Asia is a very different place than it was almost 60 years ago.
Now China is an emerging global power, North Korea has nukes, and South Korea is also gaining strength.
In addition the Americans military is muh much smaller and a large portion of their troops are currently commited to Ahghanistan and Iraq.
I can see why Americans would support a revision to the Japanese constitution.
Can't you? |
I don't care much about what they do in this regard. Although just the old saying "history repeats itself" may give some Asians distant chills, Japan is not a militant threat to anyone today. It can't/won't be for a good long time at least, as far as I can see. It's rather interesting that there's quite visible internal resistance and the revision hasn't happened. If that ever happens, who will benefit and who will not? |

I'm not sure about China but can see how in South Koreans' eyes they should be the most respected of the Asian nations. But they aren't |
The Japanese for the most part have accepted and adopted Western values and practices. The Chinese for the most part have not.
The answer to your question is pretty simple. |

He was talking about South Koreans. Like the Japanese, they've adopted many Western customs (totally at random), accepted the supremacy of English as GOD'S ONE TRUE LANGAUGE, and have close military, diplomatic, and economic ties to the US. But they don't have a history of bitch-slapping their neighbors, until you go several centuries back. Sounds like a good choice if you're an American looking for an Asian country to idolize. |

Ahh, thanks for the correction.

Anyone care to wager that quite a few Koreans and Chinese are just a little more than miffed that Japan came out of that war smelling like roses?
A little bit upset at the fact that even AFTER Japan initiated the war, lost it big time and commited numerous war crimes, it is arguably the most "popular" of asian countries with westerners? I mean, it is quite obvious that westerners in general have a deeper facsination with Japanese culture.

Although I would dispute your characterization of Japan coming out of the war smelling like roses, I think you're right that comparatively, that's how it would appear to Chinese and Koreans.
Yes, what you say has to be true. But Koreans, when they hate on Japan, are not smart about it IMO. If I were trying to get Koreans to hate on country X, I'd talk about all the bad things country X did to Korea, not all the bad things country X did to my country.
Let's face it: Korean (and Chinese) hatred of Japan is almost entirely wrapped up in envy and nationalism. [/u] |
