What is a "freegan?" A "freegan" is a bum. You can choose to be a bum and call yourself something trendy, like "freegan." |

bullshit. stores throw out food. some of it is totally fine. if someone is either smart enough to take advantage of that, or dumb enough to risk the various germs that can be found in a dumpster, then they are most certainly not a bum.
waste is more of a bum activity than dealing with waste in a practical way. |

I've dumpster dived. You can get some great stuff for free! And it's exciting dodging the cops. |

Oh come on...
Bum Checklist:
1) Digging in dumpsters
2) Squatting
3) Refusing to work/Unable to get a job
4) Hitchhiking as your sole form of transportation
Freegan Checklist

4) Hitchhiking as your sole form of transportation
Sounds like a bum to me... |

a bum is a person who is a burden on others.
1. digging in dumpsters hurts nobody as long as it's done quietly and any extraneous mess is dealt with. my main experience with d-divers is vancouver, and the vancouver pigs will fine or beat the living crap out of any binner who steps out of line. i'm assuming it's the same all over the western world.
2. organized squatting is a good thing. why leave a building empty?
3. how could someone refusing to work/get a job affect others directly, unless they collected welfare? most freegans are hire-able (except for how they smell), so they likely don't qualify for welfare in most modern countries.
4. hitchhiking only affects you if you pick up hitchhikers. sounds like you probably don't. therefore it doesn't affect you.
bum theory squashed. thanks for calling. |

Freegans are Anarchists. Capitalist society is built around waste and oppression. The Earth is raped of it's resources which are later thrown into garbage bins. The Masses are forced to work at jobs that the majority of them don't want just to perpetuate a work ethic that is out of date.
Very little of the money that goes into welfare actually goes to the people who need it. It goes to paying government pencil pushers. Unemploying is a goverment policy. Having high levels of unemployment actually benefits most wealthy capatalist countries. |

How is a bum a burden on others? A bum does EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS AS A FREEGAN! Are freegans burdens on others?

Why have laws? Why board up dangerous facilities? Why have ownership of anything? Why not just refuse to pay the owner of a building in order to use a building? I'd say squatting is a burden on landowners and property owners who have to deal with damaged property, siphoned electricity, and extraneous liability.

It doesn't affect others directly, but it is what a bum would do...

Actually, I've picked up a hitchhiker or two, but hitchhiking doesn't really affect me. Yet, it is something a bum would do.

I agree. This is a very good post. But nobody is going to want to ally themselves with people called "Freegans".
I don't care what they stand for. "Freegans" is a terrible name. |

the freegans, if you look at it deeply enough, are capitolists. they're capitalizing off of and baking on the fact that there will be enough wasted goods for them to live off of. they invest by not buying anything and waiting for other consumers to throw their goods away. they gain capital every time they dig something out of a dumpster. and they are vegan, so they won't even eat meat or dairy that's going to waste due to ethics, but they'll still use the tide laundry detergent that proctor and gamble distributes and cruelly tests on animals?
taking something that's been wasted and putting it to good use is great, and good for the freegans on that. but, hypothetically, what if every normal citizen started wearing their clothes until they were beyond wear or repair and squeezing every last drop possible out of their toothpaste tubes or only threw out rotten, bacteria ridden food? what do the freegans do then? do they get jobs for the corporations they so hate? do they bite the bullet and buy food at the grocery store, thus contributing to the disgusting economies they're protesting?
It seems to me that they're protesting a throwaway society, but the only way they can survive with their ethics in tact is for a throwaway society to be in existence for their use. it's not hurting the corporations they're boycotting much if other people are buying and wasting enough of their junk for two people instead of one to live off of.
that said, i've seen the waste in retailers and grocery stores, and if they want to eat it, fine. in america, our mentality regarding goods and consumerism is so fu cked. freegans, your cause is paper thin, but keep doing what you're doing. |

your only decent and rational argument. 1/4 ain't bad, sir. however, think of all the property developers who leave buildings empty, write them off on their taxes and refuse to pump any of their hard earned profit into renewal or maintenance (of even their occupied properties) . . until a place starts gentrifying. should we be sympathetic to those parasites? a capitalist yes-man would say yes.

It doesn't affect others directly, but it is what a bum would do... |
you're discriminating against people because they don't follow your preconception of what an individual's economic life should be. i now assign you the movie "fight club" for homework. no bakunin or marx... i want you to at least be entertained. the more someone wants to live off the grid, the less they're a burden on you, the whiny taxpayer. therefore, not a bum.

again, discrimination. and neglectful of the fact that carpooling is a great way to cut greenhouse gases. and you're not even taking into account the people who work hard and live 5 miles out of town but can't afford the upkeep of a car because they work two minimum wage jobs.

yeah but i actually compose my own arguments and try to be accountable when i'm wrong. (see your squatting comments)
a bum gets in your way and gets angry when you don't give him change. a bum is on welfare when he could get a job. a bum is a perfectly capable person who lives off a parent or girlfriend with low self esteem.
a bum is a corporate ceo who asks his shareholders to pay his income tax. . . |

granted the fact that food is wasted is a shame and the result of not only market forces but litigation. If the US would pass more good samaritan laws , people could actually change their community. But right now some crack head gets bot poisoning at a soup kitchen and sues Catholic Charities. Life is great. |
