don't respect grown men who play computer games as their main hobby
don't respect grown men who are still living at home at age 28
don't respect grown men who hit women
don't respect grown men who squat, spit and sneer
don't respect grown men who lie and cheat on their wives
and yet I have to constantly say "cultural difference" here
on a bad day (like today) they just look absurd |

I don't think people "respect" those things here. I am not sure where you are from, but I am pretty sure that where you are from:
- Men cheat on their wives
- Men have sex with prostitutes
- Men beat their wives
- Men still live at home at 28
- Men get drunk and fight each other
- Men do a lot more drugs
- Men commit more violent crime
Just because these things happen do you think people "respect" the individuals who do it.
I from the UK. Most men I know play computer games but only as a passtime not a hobby, we have the occasional Pro Evo tournament, but otherwise the playstations remain unused. I have a friend who is a policeman, another who is a secondary school teacher. They are both 28 and earn over 20,000 pounds (40,000 dollars) a year but cannot afford to move out of their parents houses. They are far more capable individuals than I am yet I have my own apartment and they are forced to live at home.
Just from my experience the people who have moved out have saved no money because it all goes on rent, they have maxed out credit cards on clothes and gadgets whereas the people who stay at home until late 20's early 30's save enough tho buy their own house later. I have a lot more respect for someone who is living at home and saving money. |

In defense of computer games: there are some pretty rich, powerful people involved in those things.
That and the respected Koreans I know around here generally play golf or go fishing or do gardening.. It's the younger set that spend most of their time in the PC bangs. |

I don't think the OP meant those men are even respected in Korea as I know he's not a troll. What he meant must be that people are more lenient/oblivious to those in Korea compared to where he comes from.
1. No big stigma in Korea. There are even people who make money from game-playing. Among youth, if you are a good game player, it's all cool. You can show off your fast reaction, accuracy, decision-making, hand-eye coordination, brilliant strategies, etc. You can simultaneously be the school's best b-baller and Counter-Strike player.
2. No big stigma in Korea. There's no obvious reason for them to leave home as if it's just destined whatsoever. Many still live with their parents until they pass away. Now, if they are still economically dependent on their parents at age 28, there's a problem. But simply living at home with their parents? Nothing wrong.
3. Nobody likes grown men who hit women anywhere as far as I know. Korea-specifically, how would you reconcile with the stereotype/image of girlfriend's purse-carrying guys or those who generally bend over and suck up to their girlfriends?
4. Spitting too much is seen crude and low in Korea. The silly thing is, some guys may think it's an image that makes them look tough or something. What's with sneering?
5. Nobody likes grown men who lie and cheat on their wives anywhere as far as I know. |

Exactly. I'm talking about how other Koreans treat those who do those things. OF COURSE the behaviour happens everywhere to various degrees. But the way such actions are treated here is headshaking at times. And the men act as if such actions are no big deal.

Why do Korean men so often look down on Western men who aren't married and yet so many middle aged Korean men use the services of prostitutes? Yes, there's a 'cultural difference' answer but sometimes it just looks absurd.
Yeah, I've often wondered about the men in this country. In grad school I was T.A. for a interdisciplinary undergrad course on Men & Masculinity and about two-thirds of that course has to be thrown out of the window in the Korean context (was Western biased, yeah).
On a bad day (every few months, not often) all the 'cultural difference' talk in the world just doesn't resonate. But then the next day comes, and things change. |

You may have a lot more first-hand experiences with this. I had my student life up to the first year in university in Korea and didn't have enough chance to mingle with older people of all walks of life. |

Adult classes daily with the Daewoo shipbuilding inspection and management workers.
But anyways... the cultural differences make sense when you think of all things together.
This thread is the closest thing to a rant I get. Today is another day... |
