I hear you loud and clear. I hate the 3 adjumas sat in here right now so much I've resigned! Laughing Beat that! Gave them 5 weeks notice.* It's my break time - two hours until next class - and I'd honestly rather teach, or work down a pit, than sit near these witches on my precious time off. Gotta have the MP3 on all the time.

My view is that Koreans, men included, make these noises (and at such volume and intensity) because of social class. They are what the British refer to as 'working class'. Very unusual to observe this behavior in a superior class of person.

*It's not the only reason because I've kind of got to go home, but it's influenced my contempt for this type of Korean

tho i don't want to encourage the people in this thread that are whining just as stridently as those they seem to have a problem with - especially as the op seemed to intend it as a discussion of the RHYTHM of the korean language, and not a rant about how intolerant some of us are, i couldn't help but wonder...

perhaps the fact that u don't understand what they're saying has something to do with how annoying u find it?

I've lived here nearly 3 years and understand quite a lot. That's not the reason at all. It's the volume, the intensity, the harshness. It's hideous beyond comprehension.

Sometimes it's the fact that you DO understand it that makes it annoying. Wink

(Truthfully, I love learning Korean. I found out about a coworker's secret boyfriend yesterday because we were riding the bus together, ending up making double date plans, found out more about her than I have in 8 months of eating lunch with her and 12 other coworkers. It was a nice moment, a moment that I hadn't planned on when I started learning Korean, a moment I haven't studied Korean for, but a moment that could not have happened without my studying.)
