I'm thinking of visiting Andong one weekend coming up. I've heard very mixed reviews of the place (some say boring, some say intriguing). It's one of those places I've heard talked about in relation to Korean culture, so I think I should go there.... Tell me about it...

From what I've heard, it's the most conservative city in Korea.

Why don't you just go, and then decide for yourself.

People in Andong will probably tell you that you should go to Hahoe Folk Village, but give Byeongsan Seowon, Buseoksa or Dosan Seowon a try too. The first two are very difficult to get to though, unless you rent a car; consider doing that for a day. Byeongsan Seowon is particularly beautiful; bring a lunch and eat it down by the Nakdong River.

The 'downtown' area was surprisingly...lively? It isn't that it's so lively, it was just more lively than I expected. Plenty of restaurants, hofs, and a little younger crowd than most mid-sized towns. (I guess there are three or four universities around the city.)

(You might try PMing uberscheisse. He lived there for a while.)

The Soju and Korean Food Museum! You get a free couple of shots of the soju, not the cheap stuff. Should be good for a 30 minute jaunt.

Why don't you not post, since you only have useless comments?

Good points. I often find that the must-sees for Koreans are different than ones for foreigners....or, things that Koreans find impressive might not be so to foreigners. I will go to Hahoe Village of course, because it does sound cool, but the other places you mentioned sound very interesting. Thanks for the tip on PMing uberscheisse, too! Smile

Rolling Eyes

I've been to Andong on two occasions, both for the Mask Dance Festival. I liked the town. I thought it was cool. Some people might not like it. Go, and decide for yourself. I wasn't trying to be snide.

well, that's much more useful. I was only looking for people's opinions.

Just thought I'd post about my trip to Andong...

It was awesome! One of the best trips ever. There weren't too many people at the sites and the blossoms were out. We hit Hahoe Village, Dosan Seowan and Jebiwan (the huge Buddha carved from rock near a temple). I really recommend going if you haven't!
