I would recommend to anyone going to Kazakstan that they study some Russian first, and learn a few Kazak greetings as soon as possible as that will take you a longgg way in building good relations! In other countries, Russian is not taken so well (Uzbekistan for one), but it is still the Lingua Franca of Kazakstan.

Get used to having the KBG tapping your phone lines, your students questioned about your classroom topics, and the occasional person trailing around after you.

Without knowing Russia that well, is that worse than Russia or just status quo of the region in general?

Regarding Kazakhstan, I heard they were thinking of romanizing the alphabet? Is that still on the table?

The cyrillic alphabet is really quite easy to learn. A number of letters are the same as in the roman alphabet. A number of letters look the same but are pronounced differently and there are only a handful that are completey different from ours. I learned the entire alphabet in two days with absolutely no problem. The Korean alphabet is (in my opinion) much harder.

Also, spellings in Russian, as in Spanish (and Korean for that matter) are pretty much uniform so it really isn't hard to learn the letters at all.

The thing that's probably hardest for westerners is the case system (nouns and adjectives mutate according to their usage, number and gender) and the lack of "the" and "a/an" and the way the verb "to be" doesn't normally exist in the present tense.

I'm intrigued by Mongolia or Kazakhstan.

Not the sorts of places I'd work for a year though!!! Maybe just a holiday..

Same here. I'm probably most intrigued with traveling there. Maybe this Summer, if possible.

I am begging my wife to go to Mongolia with me. Most of her vacations will be back to China though, so I might be heading there on my own. I'm absolutely fascinated with Mongolia and its culture.

I did a study abroad at MGU..Moscow State Uni and tutored on the side..made good money..people came to my home after meeting them in public places a few times..made some lifelong friends.

Also, I taught English in a public school..English was added at the end of the day and everyone had to take and pass my class. The money was good, lunch was provided and all in all it was good.

I lived there a year..98-99

I arrived here from the Ukraine. Everything about the country pretty much sucks. Ok, the women are beautiful and the kids are friendly.

Can you elaborate on some of the things that you didn't like?

No. Those places aren't safe. You can get drunk and sleep on park benches without trouble in Korea and Taiwan.

That's my gauge.
