I'm thinking of taking a trip to Jeju island during the first week of May.

Anyone have any suggestions? My plan was to rent a motorbike and just kind of drive around for a few days. Do I need a special license or anything (I have a valid US drivers license)? How big is the island, and how accessible? What's the temperature like in early May? How expensive is stuff?

And any other thoughts are appreciated...

We just came back ourselves from Jeju! Had a really great time! The weather was lovely apart from one day which we used to climb Mount Hallasan instead! We rented a car which you need an International driving license for but I'm not sure about a motorbike! The key is to really plan out your route beforehand, we kept back tracking and ended up doing 500km over the five days!! The rental company must of thought "what the f&*%!!!" Also I wouldn't advise staying in Seogwipo, we stayed there one night and really wasn't anything special (maybe though we didn't know where to look!!). Highlights for us were staying a beautiful hotel in Pyoseon Beach, climbing Mount Hallasan, commenting on all the matching couple clothes, bracing ourselves at every tourist stop to the groups of screaming school kids:), having dinner at the Indian restaurant Baghdad Cafe in Jeju Si and just looking at all the really beautiful views!!!
Have fun!!!

Uh oh... international driving license... I only have a US license (a valid one).

How long did you guys go for? How big is the island, or how long does it take to get around? Think I could do it in a few days? I'm not big on touristy outings... just want to drive around on a motorbike and look at pretty stuff.

I think you can only get your international license from your home country, so we got ours before we headed over here. Renting a motor bike might be different though an your US one will be fine, just google the rental companies in jeju! The Island is 250 km along the coast line so it's easily do able in a few days. Beaches are the best freebie there but watch out for the ones on tourist routes because droves of kids will be there! Places like Seongsan Ilchulbong, (sunrise peak), Hallasan and Cheonjiyeon waterfall all all places to see, but you have to pay 2,000/ 3,000 won in these places and really everywhere you go!!! Freebies are the beaches and O'Sulluc Cha Museum.

Americans and Canadians can trade in their driver's licenses from their home country in exchange for a Korean license. They will give you your license back when you leave Korea.

I recomend going to Jungmun Beach. Lots of sand and surf. One of the few beautiful Korean beaches not yet covered with concrete.
