Seeing the post about the board game cafe made me think about the game of Risk. I got kind of hooked on computer risk when I was at university. It was kind of a mindless thing to do when my brain was fried after homework.

I usually played Risk with my family over the holidays... but now I'm in Korea Confused .

Ok I'll get to the point: does anyone know where in Korea (Seoul area) I could find the game of Risk? Probably hard to find I know, but maybe someone knows of some obscure game store somewhere..... the big department stores seem to have just monopoly.

There is a board game cafe in Shinchon that has it. Don't ask me where, but a friend saw it on the "menu".

I'll ask him and get back to you.

At my school we had a mean Risk tournament going on for the better part of the last year. We've taken a break, but now that we're into winter vacation we'll start it up again..

It's nice because all of us have won at least one 1/2 semester tournament - well, all of us except one guy, but I won't mention who he is because he posts here sometimes and I don't want to embarrass him. Smile

Whenever I'd play that game I'd of course go for N. America, but if I failed in that I'd take over Australia and fester and grow. I wouldn't attack anybody, oh no. I'd just sit there and keep piling on armies like a tick sucking blood.

By the time anybody really took notice of me down there they'd be too damned scared to try and do anything about it. I knew I couldn't win the game at that point, but I'd be a spoiler against whoever annoyed me the most. Then they'd get the full taste of Down-Under Thunder TM.

Good times. Good times.

The problem with Axis & Allies is that unless the Allies are idiots, they're going to win, every time.

First round, Russia buys all infantry and attacks Germany with everything they've got. England buys nothing but bombers and starts continuous strategic bombing on Germany, and continues this for most of the game, with a small sideshow in N. Africa. America buys an airforce to take out Japan's navy and then starts island hopping while shipping troops from the east coast to link up with the Brits in Africa.

Keep Japan occupied, neuter Germany and the game's won. I love the game, but it just gets predictable.

That's why you should try A&A Europe. This time there are only 4 countries involved (Russia, Germany, USA and GB), there are new rules for subs, amphibious assualts etc. etc. Germany starts off with a MASSIVE stack and you have to be an idiot to lose with them. Mind you, if your strategies are sound, you can win with the Allies. It's a great game. There's also A&A Pacific, but I haven't played it.

The only problem with A&AE is that the US doesn't really get involved until about turn 4 or 5 until they have enough of an arsenal built up, and even still you end up having to supply Russia and GB who have taken a pounding by then. Still, the game is good fun. I've been dying to get a 4 player game going ...

Huh. I never even knew that it existed (or A&A Pacific!). It does sound pretty cool. I take it the US has to stockpile on Great Britain, right? Is N. Africa portrayed so I can pull an Operation Torch and then move up into Sicily?

They sell both those games on some of the american bases...so the blackmarket stores might have them.

I always hated risk...and as for Axis and Allies, it is all in how you roll the dice. My brother was always lucky and would get the best rolls possible EVERY time...so I stopped playing a game where the dice decide more than strategy on whether or not you win or lose.

I used to have a rule, no attacking for the first round, as one time my brother rolled all the best rolls and pretty much gimped me on the first round...rather annoying.

The game board is set up at the beginning to reflect military strengths of all nations around late '42-early '43, I believe (I'll check that). Germany has a massive stockpile in central/eastern Europe and is set to take on Russia. GB has a smallsih stack on the island, and a pitifully small force in NAfrica, but with some skill, you can knock out the Germans there and take full control of the oil reserves. Operation Torch can be done with some patience. and resupply, but you have to draw forces from GB to do so (especially sea forces). Still, it can be done.

The US starts the game with almost nothing (a couple of planes and a destroyer or two) but a MASSIVE economy. Like I said, for the first 3-4 turns, the US basically has to churn out as much firepower as it can to assist usually the British at this point.

A skillful German player can even execute Operation Sealion, usually around turn 6 or 7, to end the game if they're not too bogged down in Russia (which can and usually does happen).
