I got LG Powercom 2 years ago for about 45k / month. At the time it was better than KT Megapass.
What is the best now? Is there a fiber optic option?
No way do I get 10 MB per sec on trackers like isohunt. Most I get is maybe 1-2 MB per sec on new TV shows like TVtorrents.com tracker.
BTW will an upgrade, if possible, affect only my download speed? What about by latency and ping to game servers in the US and Europe? |

I haven't seen fiber out where I am, but I would think they should have it in Seoul. If you can get it, yes your pings will go down significantly.
A guy I played cs with in the states was playing on a chicago server from dallas and when he switch to fiber his ping went from 60-80 down to 4-10. |

how much is fiber? I'm just outside of Seoul to the South, still in the Metro area. Wonder if it is available here.
But if most of my ping comes from the transoceanic hops then is fiber really gonna help me that much? |

Don't know, I haven't seen anyone running fiber here. It might not be so drastic, but if it dropped 50+ off a ping from Dallas to Chicago I would imagine it would drop over 50 from whatever you get now. (He was running dsl, btw. If you have cable there will be less change in pings.) |

That's what kills me about Korea(ns). When I got here over a year ago, everyone (Koreans) talked up their, "best in the world," internet service. My internet connection in Japan was much faster than anything I have had here (KT Megapass & Hanaro), and fiber optic is everywhere in Japan (excluding the countryside). Koreans love to talk the talk but not walk the walk. Put up or shut up. |

I have a different experience cangel, my internet in Korea was faster. I was probably getting 40-50kb/s speed in Japan using yahooBB but was getting much faster speed in Korea.
Of course, it is unfair to compare a house in Japan to my Korean apartment, the apartment is always going to have fiber optic connection. Not every house is going to have it.
Korean does offer more internet cafes than I have ever seen in a country. There are PC bangs every where and cheap (starting at 700won per hour). |

I have seen 600 an hour, but 1k seems standard. |

you need to consider where you live.
i've been told by KT and hanaro that my building can't have upgraded internet, because of the building's system and age.
unless you're prepared to pony up for a dedicated line ... or you're lucky enough to live in a new building.
btw, a number of korean friends already have city wide wi-fi accounts ... they said the service is patchy at the moment, but it's getting better.
not good for gaming, but good for regular folk! |

Your building must have a high-speed fiber-optic network to get the really high speeds.
This is usually only found in high-rises less than 10 years old. |
