I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a couple of ideas of how to make learning the ordinal numbers fun for the students.
Cheers

Not my idea I googled it. Here you go:

A good way of doing it is to write each ordinal number, either by word or by number, on a small slip of paper and hand them out randomly face down on the students desks . Bring in a stop watch, and tell them when you say go they have to get into a line from 1st to the highest number and then call them out correctly. Time it and then play again, telling them they have a chance to beat their previous time, though mix up the cards again.
Another way is to have a mini olympics in teams and award first, second, third etc.

I just finished that unit last week with my public school grade 6er's. First the lesson is not just about ordinal numbers, it is also about being able to read the date correctly, or that's how I saw it. Here is what I did to cover the lesson.

Go on the internet and find a free 2008 printable calendar, preferablely where can have a separate page for each month. Then photocopy it, I made 5 copies, and staple them together.

Do a quick review of the date. Example today is April 22nd, blah blah blah. Then go over the months by flipping through each month and having the students repeat. Then do I a quick review of the ordinal numbers by having students repeat each day for a month. Example, April 1st to April 31. Then place the students into groups. I am not sure how big your classes are, but I made 4 groups of 8 students. Give each group a calendar.

Have the each group sit in a circle and place their hands on each others. Then have them spread their arms high in the air and shout " happy birthday". (That was my team buzzer cue.)

Keep one copy of the calendar for yourself as a reference copy. Say something like " My birthday is in March on day 25" ,you can write it on the board, if your kids are really low. Students must then raise their hands and shout " Happy Birthday" together then say the correct date all together. (Speaking altogether is key.) They must say the date correctly together Example March twenty fifth, not March twenty five. If they are right, give that team a point. If they are wrong or don't say the date together don't give them the point rather and wait for another team to answer.

Next make the game a bit more tricky. Say birthday is on the 5th month 21 day. So the kids must find May the 21st day and shout together "May twenty first.

Next make it even more tricky. My birthday is the 10th month, 2nd week, 5th day, which works out to get October 9th. The group must find, say happy birthday then say the date.

Last, if you can find a calendar with holidays on it, say the name of the holiday and have the kids find it. Example, "When is Earthday?" The group must find it and say "April 22nd."

Try it out. It's awesome and take little prep time to do. Plus, the kids will have a blast. Just to make things a bit harder, I had my students answer in complete sentences. Example " Your birthday is on March twenty fifth!" or "Earth Day is on April 22nd!"

I should also point out that this game can get noisy at times. If a group is talking out of turn, just takea point or two away from them as a penality and they will be quiet.

If you want to give homework or an after school task, have kids find their birthday on the calendar.
