Went to immigration today to take care of something and my wife asked about F2 renewals. Supposedly after having one for 2+ years, you can get a 2 year renewal instead of the standard one year. The lady didn't answer, so my wife asked her again. She said that we must have a baby to get the 2 year extension. Anyone heard this one?

It gets better. I asked her to go ask a different immigration officer and he gives a totally different answer, no baby required! He was polite and answered all her questions in detail.

Go figure...

I work for a Korean woman and her American husband and they just got his F-2 renewed for two years after having F-2 visas for two years. So what you heard seems to be consistent.

why don't you get an F-5 visa?

after being on an F-2 for 2 years you qualify for the F-5. it never needs to be renewed, you never have to deal with immigration again and if you divorce, you can still keep it for life.

these are just some of the benefits.

Too bad you didn't say to the flunky...er, lady at the counter who came up with that bit about must have a baby in as coldly calm and monotone voice as you could:

Print out the particular law that states that. And do it now.
