Okay, this may be a stupid question, but I'm having a money issue, so help me out . . .

I've been here for less than a week, and I have some money coming my way, but it may be a week or two before I see it (I don't even have a bank account yet, I'm going to get registered with my co-teacher this afternoon). But I don't think I really brought enough cash with me from back home. Granted, I have plenty in my checking/savings accounts.

So, part of the reason why I didn't bring that much cash is because everywhere I've lived abroad before, ATMs were readily accessible. English was an option, and with a small fee, you could withdraw money from your account back home and get it dispensed in local currency.

My question is this- Can you do that here? I don't know if I'm just missing them or what, but I've not really seen an ATM yet. I've only seen a couple of banks, and there are no ATMs in sight.

Anyhow, for what its worth, I'm in Suwon. If there are ATMs around, and there's one in the neighborhood of Suwon Stn., that would rock.

Thanks for the help . . .

You need a global ATM. Go to central Seoul, like Anguk station where Insadong is, and banks around the Cheonggyechon at City Hall and Gwanghwamun.

It will say "Global ATM."

This situation just shows how far Korea has to go to be a world player.

Okay sounds good.

But does anyone know of anything closer to Suwon? If not, I shall hang my head in shame and make the trip to Seoul . . .

I'll be coming to Korea next week.

KEB is one of the bigger banks in Korea. They're one of the banks that you can use to wire money back home, etc.

I'll be opening my account with them when I get set up.

I was going to bring enough cash to have on hand for the first month anyways..

but there should be at least one major bank/ATM in Suwon that would accept your US card, etc..

ask your Korean coordinator/teacher

There are a couple of free-standing ATM machines in Suwon station (2nd floor if I remember correctly) as well as the underground entrance across the street at the bus stop that accept Cirrus cards for withdrawals from home.

They usually have the "NICE" logo on them and will have the logos of the different networks they access (like VISA, PLUS, CIRRUS, etc.).

Most subway stations have at least one of them (usually not too far from the ticket counter).

So long as you have a Cirus, Plus or whatnot card, you should be able to get money out of many ATMs here. I have used the post office ATMs, Citibank and many others, including convenience store ATMs. In fact, I have found more ATMs in Korea that accept foreign cards than not. No worries.

There is a Standard Chartered ATM downstairs at Suwon Station, kind of tucked away. Go into the supermarket down on the basement level where the subway entrance is. Go right before you enter the actual grocery section, then go left and walk toward the little wine shop. Just beyond it, there's an ATM. If that doesn't work, take the subway south two stations to Byeongjeom. There are two branches of KEB here, as well as a branch of SC, and their ATMs ought to provide international access. I've used one of them to withdraw cash from a foreign account before. PM for directions.
