We have been discussing this issue in our Communication Ethics class recently. There are, among the 28 people in our class, Buddhists, Hindus, Christains- from non-participants to avid born agains - and Chinese communists who feel religion is strange (as they put it).

Anyway, we were talking about the elections to the south and how God seems to be so prevalent in every facet of public, and sports for that matter, life. It is so different compared to Canada, especially politically, where God just doesn't receive the same attention by the electorate and those elected.

Our professor asked the question, "Do you think an atheist could get elected President in the USA?" Our resounding class opinion was NO WAY! Although we, as a group, can't see the connection between one's non secular views, and one's ability to run a nation.

So. There it is. What do you think?

Ever? Who knows...

But certainly not for the foreseeable future, as we still have nutcases that want to force intelligent design and other religious theories into public school classrooms. John McCain is already facing criticism for being private about his religion... which is the way his generation thought it should be.

Bear in mind that for probably 40% of the population, if not more, they wouldn't even consider voting for a non-Christian, much less an atheist. They think that it's perfectly acceptable to use abortion as a litmus test for every single federal judge (see: Tom Tancredo).

Yes, I do.

We might have a Mormon vice president, if it comes down to it. 25years from now, after having a Black president, a woman, a few non-Christians, we might get an open Atheist candidate, and, eventually, an Atheist president, should s/he be good enough in the eyes of the people.

I would not consider myself an Atheist but I would vote for an Atheist candidate. Most of the people (college-aged) that I know would have no major problem voting for a Atheist candidate.

I also think there's a lot to Atheism that people don't fully understand or aren't exposed to.

Not anytime soon, and I don't think Dawkins' ramblings have helped the situation.

Never happen. Too many people believe religion is the exclusive foundation for morality and human decency. They will not trust those who espouse a different paradigm.

Any country that is run by a guy who says that he is on a mission from God really is in big trouble.

I imagine it has already happened several times.

I am sorry spliff, but that statement is not logical.

I am "A" therefore "B" exists has no basis in logic. Rhetoric maybe, but definitely not logic.

A decorated War Hero would be elected President no matter what the religion.

These guys don't exist anymore. However, if you had a General who fixed Iraq, put Iran its place, and basically kicked ass at everything he did, meanwhile causing his enemies to tremble in fear at the mention of his name, then YES, an Atheist could be elected President.

Its not likely these days where military leaders are criticized under a microscope of civilians who have never fired a gun in their life.
