I know I'm a noob at this but I appreciate any advice I get. I've tried searching but nothing.
Two schools want to hire me. One is teaching young kids for 2.2 from 10am-8pm, 2 hour lunch. Two teachers vouch that it's a great place (SLP). The other is Virtedco, teaching adults for 2.8 a month in a new school in Gangnam. I'm assuming I'm going to love the location, but I hate that it will be a split shift, four hours in the morning and four hours in the late evening. The school has told me that they want to make it a straight eight hours, but I've heard it might be just talk.
Please keep in mind that I do like to go out at night. |

Considering the wages I'm guessing that the first place is providing housing and the second isn't. That can be a *big* issue if you're coming over for the first time.
With the first job, a 10AM start probably means at least two kindergarten class per day, which in Korea could mean working with kids as young as 3 in western years. ECE is *not* for everyone - be warned. |

I'm sorry, yes, both include housing. I've heard the housing is very nice also at both. |

If you're a night owl, then the split shifts could suck butt, especially if you head out to party after work, cause then you have to be up early. On the other hand, if you avoided going out on "school nights", you could sock away a bunch of dosh, and you would have your afternoon and early evening to enjoy. |

If it's the SLP contract you put up then don't go for that.
Split shifts are also crap don't go for that either. I'm sure both contracts got the thumbs down.
There's better ones out there, waiting is the key, use more than one recruiter, and research. |

Even w/ housing that salary is too low for 8 hr teaching day...way too low. Split shift as well. I assume w/ 8 hrs per day you'll be getting a lot of overtime pay. How much do they offer for OT? |

Thanks a lot everyone, really good advice!
I've been researching and using more than one recruiter and these are the best deals I've seen. You're right, both contracts got the thumbs down, but I've talked with current foreign teachers at both and got great reviews, which is I think is most important.
I am leaning more towards the the adult school in Gangnam. I do know if I didn't have to be at work early I could blow a lot of money going out. At the same time, teaching kids seems a lot more fun and easy. |

Sorry, overtime is 22,000. I asked one of the current foreign teachers how much overtime they've worked and they said none. |

Find something better. Teaching 8 hours is too much, especially if it includes some kindergarten classes. No way I would spend 10 hours at a school for that pay! |

2.2/8 hours of work per day, is 13750 per hour; if you're working those 2 lunch hours or expected to hang around and eat with students or staff, then it drops the hourly salary to 11000 per hour. That's kind of low for someone with a degree at home. Also, you might want to check the recent threads to see if the school's name pops up.
The job paying 2.8 for 8 hours is about 17500 per hour.
If you started at a standard hokwon making 2.3 for 6 hours a day, you would be making about 19000 per hour. |
