ok, so im in a bit of a pickle,
i arrived in korea three weeks ago, everything was going ok until last week when i found out that none of the other teachers in my school had received their salary. to make a long story short, all the teachers (korean&foreign) quit today and walked out. because my first pay day isnt until the 10th of may i couldnt just walk out.
so now the school has one rookie teacher and about 100 students, so im pretty sure the school isnt going to last very long. the school has no money to pay new teachers.
the thing is, can i get a new job here in korea if the school goes bust, or am i packing my bags and going home?
i havent been issued an ARC card yet and i dont know what implication that will have. i have an E2 visa, but its tied to this school.
any help will be greatly appreciated!!
thanks. |

so my buddy worked in a crap town at a crap school. he said it went belly up. he got a new job no problem and said that was the best scenario he could see being played out.
on the bright side if you are the only teacher there your chances of getting paid just went up drastically. |

Wait until the 10th. If you dont get paid they have violated your contract and ask them to sign a release letter or get intentionaly fired. Why didnt you ask any of your fellow co-workers for advice? |

Under the old E2 rules, if your school went out of business - your visa would be cancelled, you found a new job and you did a visa run to Japan and then would be fine to start the new job.
Under the new rules it is a bit murky. If the school goes bust, then your visa would still be cancelled, but then there would still be nothing stopping you from interviewing at other schools thereafter. The question would only be where you did a visa run to: your home country or Japan (only immigration can advise which option applies in your situation, my guess is probably the former). One way or another, it is very likely you will have to leave and then re-enter.
If you are likely to leave your current school, then try and put off getting an ARC issued, it will save trouble later if you are planning to change workplace. Once you are settled at your new school, then get it.
If you do a midnight run, then it will be very hard to get another visa issued. Therefore I would agree, stay on until at least pay day.
You never know, hagwons frequently get bought out by new owners and everything could turn out fine. Sit tight. Wait and see. |

Start looking for alternative employment IMMEDIATELY. It looks like your school is going under any day. |

yeah i have already started looking for another job, the only thing now that is standing in my way is that i need to get my criminal background check back, and i dont even know if that is possible.
would my school still have that form or was it submitted to emigration for good? |

"Kalak,"
DAEGU--if you like/love 100% humidity, coupled with extreme heat, and rain in the summer months, then work there...
I taught as a teacher there for two suckin' years!!! |
