K,
You work more hours and for less money than most on this board. You are being raped in Korea right now. Would your dad approve of that? I don't think so. I don't care if the best job you can get in Kentucky is shoveling black rocks off a conveyor belt or shoveling shat on a chicken farm, you have a degree and you are employable as an english-e teacher in korea, taiwan, thailand, and china.
You are an adult now. Do not worry about what dad thinks, unless he's sending you money every month.
As far as I'm concerned, you are being taken advantage of because of your youth. It's time to grow up man. Take a stand when you need to. Trust your gut. If you have to be an hour late, don't let the pri ck that's making you work 8 classes per day guilt you.
Please, this is a turning point in your life. You're either going to be a lay down guy from now on or a stand up guy. You are at that age. Play it the hard way and be tough, but not stupid. Listen to tpatz.
Do you want to be 40 years old, getting treated like a baby by some boss (here or in the states, or where ever)? The way you react now is going to determine the rest of your life.
Stand up for yourself, be tactful and use your brain. Never be a pushover.
good luck |
Good post that! I entirely agree, you have to say to your old feller, 'Look dad, my self respect is being comprimised here and as much as I love you and respect you, I'm gonna tell Mr Kim that the dogs have barked for the last time and he is going to pay the fucking tab!' Or something along those lines - make it as cryptic as posible, you don't have to say 'Dad - I'm packing this shit gig in and telling Mr Kim to stick his job up his arse' Be more subtle than that.
Don't be subtle with Mr Kim though because Subtlety is a waste of time with Korean bosses, say something like this the next time he mugs you off 'You must have think I've crawled out of a bin you twaaaaaaaat, I can be at Incheon airport by 9pm... yup thats 7 hours away - I think I might go home and pack my suitcase, do you fancy teaching B2 class eh? Do you think you'll get another mug to take my place in these turbulent times? I'll write you an email from Bangkok before the repo men take your computer away Mr Kim you fuckwit'
You don't have to say all that word for word but you need to stand up to the mental pygmy and tell him you are not taking this crap anymore. As for your dad - well Kenny Rogers sung a good song about it before you were born and one of the verses went like this.
I promised you, dad, not to do the things you done.
I walk away from trouble when I can.
Now please dont think Im weak, I didnt turn the other cheek,
And papa, I sure hope you understand:
Sometimes you gotta fight when youre a man. |

um yeah, i am not quitting. Then all the crap that have done so far would be for nothing. He was an asshole. No doubt about it, but assholes are everywhere in life. If he ever pulls crap on me again, though, I will tell him that I am busting my ass for him and I will leave without any notice if he treats me unfairly again. That should wake him up considering that I'm the only English teacher here.
Ironically, the same boss asked me today if I wanted to stay another year. |

Not trying to be a jerk, but this is no reason to stay.

Sunk-cost fallacy refers to the fact that regardless of how much money you have dumped into a sinkhole, it is in fact still a sinkhole. |

I'm the only foreigner here. I would feel bad about quitting and plus my parents would feel that this was a failed trip. My dad always tells me to finish this contract so I can have a reccomendation and not have an empty gap in my resume. Plus, I have quit a lot of things in my life and I don't need to add this to the list no matter how frustrating it may be. Honestly, though, I feel like this last 6 months has probaly cut off an extra two years of my life. My health seems to be a good bit worse than it was when I came here. I am always congested and coughing stuff up. I also have a strange itchy rash on my stomach. This kind of profession is pure mental frustration. You really do have to have a thick skin here. |
You think you're going to get a recommendation from this job? Ha. Hahahaha. |

Oh my!
I was just about to post practically the same thing!
Yeah... Macro and Micro-Economics didn't teach me much that I remember, but the sunk cost fallacy has always stayed with me!
No matter how long you wait in line, it's not worth staying there if there's not a foreeable and immediate benefit! Get the heck out of a bad situation! |

Yep. It's just throwing money into a pit. Throwing money at the problem just because you've already thrown money at it does nothing but waste money.
Quit and get a different job that respects you as a human being. |

My first boss called me 'shebal geseki' around the time that things were coming to a close. I'm sure he thought I wouldn't know what that meant - as if I'd never been to a PC-bang. I just smiled and said 'as long as you meet me tomorrow at immigration with the right forms there'll be no problems'.
As for the cat, imagine that you were an American employer and an immigrant worker said he had to be an hour late because of something was wrong with his snake. That's about how your K-boss likely feels. |

A Mexican fruit-picker or a visiting German teacher?
Anyway, the boss is a *beep*, and firmly hold your ground on all situations. If he flings shit, fling it back, and then take a breather and get on with your life. Don't let assholes grind you. |

Yes, I will tell him that I want something in writing explaining what I have been doing this past year. I need to get a newspaper job when I come back to the states. The first thing that potential employers will ask me about is this year gap after college.
Also, I still need to save more money and might not be able to come back because of the criminal background check (DUI). |

Good luck getting that. It's very difficult to get school directors, especially hagwon directors, to write much of anything like that.
He won't understand, and, frankly, likely won't care. |
