This seems to be pretty common in Westerners in Korea. Is it a local adoption of Korean custom or just something you inherently believe? Why are non-drinkers not 'cool' according to you? |

Why go to a frat party if you're not getting toasted?
I don't think that way myself, as while I like a couple of pints over the hockey game, I don't drink the hard stuff.
Perhaps these Westerners are adopting the herd mentality of Koreans, as you mentioned. |

It's a defensive posture that comes from insecurity. Coming from a drinker who goes through dry spells. |

I never look down on drinkers when I dont drink. When I am drinking I still dont look down on them.
Sometimes, after drinking, I look up at them, not in a moral way, but because of our relative positions.

I have a glass of wine once a year, maximum. Prior to this year I hadn't drunk anything for some 3 years. I guess that is one long ass dry spell.
The best thing about Daves is all the rubbish and silly things that people infer from posters here: he is this, he does that, he is an idiot, he is a loser, etc.
I posted this because with all the Westerners I have encountered here it's always 'you don't go out'. I do; I go out to eat and have conversation but not to drink and I was wondering why this is so prevalent here. |

Nondrinkers are always either Canadians or southern Americans (and almost always Church-going Christian, rural hicks).
Those are excellent reasons alone, but also, what could possibly, other than health reasons, be one's justification for abstaining from delights such as port, brandy, scotch and liquors such as benedictine? These things aren't the primitive, common stuff of the riff-raff, the commoners, like beer and lager are - these things are bastions of high culture, sophistication and superior taste.
Naturally, booze turns people into douchebags, but in all honesty, I have never met a nondrinker who didn't fit the description in paragraph one perfectly.....either Texans (*puke*) or Canadians telling me that they're "from way out in the boonies". |

If you don't drink, that's cool by me. Don't worry what other people think. It's not a big deal, really. |

Sorry if I wasn't too clear. My intent was to respond to your original post and say that I believe drinkers look down on non-drinkers because they are insecure about themselves. Not an earth-shattering revelation I know. And I am the drinker who goes through dry spells.
Looking back I see how my comment is easily misconstrued. No offense meant to you. |

Because no drinking is a one-way ticket on the Lame Express to Lamesville, Lameoming. Or, non-alcohol dependency. The verdict's still out on that one. |

That's funny. I could have sworn I've met many a Muslim who refused to drink. Hard core meathead bodybuilders as well. |
