the canadians you've met in korea probably aren't drinking for the following reasons:
1. korean beer is possibly the worst beer on the planet
2. getting high is waaaaaaaay better
3. they really are lame

Yeah, lifting and drinking don't go together.

If you don't drink, you're clearly not going to hang out in bars with me, so no big deal.

But the non-drinkers who want to socialize in bars...well, that's kind of annoying and I might look down on you for you lack of critical thinking skills.

Real men drink, and women who never drink are very uptight and boring.

Neither do ironing and drinking, in case anyone's wondering.

I was a non-drinker until I was around 20yrs old, but you would never catch me at a house party or someplace where I knew the vast majority of people would be smoking. What would be the point? To hang around drunk people? I never felt like I was somehow "above" people who drink, but I know of people like that.

I would have to disagree. I do all my best ironing after coming home from a good piss up.

what could possibly be one's justification for abstaining from delights such as port, brandy, scotch and liquors such as benedictine?

Because I want my breastfed one-year-old to abstain from them too?

Yeah. Socialising. It's not so easy for those of us who don't drink. Sad

Cup of tea, anyone?

Naturally, booze turns people into douchebags, but in all honesty, I have never met a nondrinker who didn't fit the description in paragraph one perfectly.....either Texans (*puke*) or Canadians telling me that they're "from way out in the boonies". Rolling Eyes

Are you serious? I hate to get all defensive, but I'm from Texas and we drink like fish. There's a huge population of people who drink nothing but Coors and Natty Light, which is barely drinking, but these no-drinking Texans certainly aren't in my line of sight here in Texas.

To the OP, I'm going to assess that once one gets into the habit of drinking for socialization, it's hard to think of other things to do after the working day is over, dinner has been eaten, and businesses have closed. Of course, there ARE other things to do, but the bar is easy. You go, you get a few drinks, you meet up with friends, and it's a forum in which to easily meet new people.

It's the same reason people will pay $6 USD, plus tip, for a drink at the bar when they could buy a whole bottle of liquor that will make 20 or more drinks for $20-30 USD.

It's easy for someone whose social life centers around drinking culture (like myself) to not understand what exactly non drinkers do for fun after 10.

Now, it's 3:22 AM in Texas, so I've got to sober up a spell before I got to git my uptight Texan rear off of the hay bale i call a bed at sun up tomorrow. I's a-gunna hop up on a horse and ride on up on to church so's i kin repent for my sinnin of drinkin. Yep, tomorrow's Thursday. Aint no day that aint made for worshippin god in the most highfalutin way possible. YEE HAW!

I look down on most people who don't drink because they are shorter than me.

And it depends. I don't like people who scream out their homosexuality, and I don't like people who don't drink preaching their philosophy at a pub. I don't care if you're gay, and I don't care if you don't drink. But if you're in a pub, then deal with a solicitation, whatever the cause, quietly.

The bar isn't on fire. We don't need any more wet blankets.

I know it sounds strange, but I love it when my non-drinking friends come to the bar with me. I have a friend who is a recovering alcoholic. He's been sober since before I knew him (about 10 years), but he's always willing to go to a bar when that's what everyone else wants to do. He drinks Cokes and water and has fun.

We never have to worry about not doing something because of him. He goes with the flow. And in return, we do other things that he wants to do...like dragging me (a straight female) to the topless club. Tit for tat (pun intended).
