If you don't drink, you're clearly not going to hang out in bars with me, so no big deal.

But the non-drinkers who want to socialize in bars...well, that's kind of annoying and I might look down on you for you lack of critical thinking skills.

Yeah. Socialising. It's not so easy for those of us who don't drink. Sad

Cup of tea, anyone?

Cool! Can we go hang out at Starbucks? Or another caffeine purveyor of your choice?

However, I don't want to go to a coffee shop with you if you're a Mormon who is just going to whine about the caffeine and the people ingesting it.

Didn't read this thread, but I don't look down on people who don't drink. Maybe if you're like 18 years old or something. I don't know.

Plus people who don't drink can drive you home. Wink

Frankly, it's because non-drinkers tend to be non-fun. Usually, these people are the ones who believe whatever their elders told them (Christians), and as a result, you can assume that non-drinkers tend to be people who aren't very open-minded. Take that for what you will. Now, that in itself isn't necessarily a big deal. I've hung out with plenty of not-very-open-minded people over the course of my life, and had some interesting conversations with them. However, as a person who thinks many ideas that are not generally considered "mainstream," I have noticed that, in the course of discussion of philosphy (for example) or (gods forbid) religion, these ideas tend to piss people off who tend to believe whatever their elders told them. This is a long correlation, and obviously flawed, but there is a strong tendancy, in my experience, that people who don't drink get pissed off by the ideas that I talk about.

They are therefore not fun to hang out with.

Of course, there are many exceptions, such as pregnant or breast-feeding women, new parents, etc. These people have different reasons for not drinking than the majority of non-drinkers. But really, it comes down to my own convenience. I'm sorry, I'm lazy.

Here's an example:

I don't date fat women. This is largely (sorry for the pun) due to the facts that A) I am not attracted to them, and B) That they are not very good in bed. I like energetic women in bed. Granted, there are some fat women who are energetic in bed (I can speak for this), but it's an easy (as I noted, I'm lazy) way to filter out bad candidates by assuming that fat people, who obviously don't excersize, are not energetic. There are plenty of women who are not fat, so I don't lose much by cutting out this demographic. On the other hand, I save myself a lot of time and energy by doing so. It is the same with non-drinkers. There are plenty of non-drinkers that are fun to hang out with, but I save myself a lot of time and energy by cutting this particular demographic out of my clique.

I used to not drink

there are others reasons(rational) why some didn't drink

1. History of family alcoholism or alcoholic parent who left a very negative impression of drinking.

2. It wasn't as enjoyable.....it's alright, but it's not like it's god's gift to fun as some like to think.

3. Also some drugs counteract the positives of alcohol or have negative effects in combination. Drinking on Adderall is a waste of cash.

4.Some people have mental problems that alcohol just simply doesn't help and/or bad drunk behavior(extremely violent/mean/annoying, blackout, will sleep with anything that moves)

5 Asian flush, nuff said

6. Straght edge....rather stupid punk movement IMO

Maybe its' just the OP. Where I come from, non drinkers are generally appreciated, so long as they're non judgmental, and willing to be the designated driver from time to time

I don't drink because I'm an athlete and am pretty strict about my diet. That doesn't mean I don't go to the bar, clubbing or have fun. I go clubbing all the time (and incidentally, you say less stupid things to women if you are sober).

I brew my own beer at home - love the varieties and flavors - find it interesting enough as a hobby which requires little time...

I drink because I enjoy the taste, (and perhaps to some extent my dad was pretty old fashioned and always had a beer after work with his dinner) and it seems refreshing after work.

As another poster mentioned, I too find it an easy way to be sociable - Meet, eat, drink, and hell be merry....

My best friend home is straight edge, and that is fine...we can still shoot the shit and have done so since we were toddlers. He doesn't look down on me, nor do I on him.
